In the Nick of Time
Michelle drove slowly through the wind driven snow. The weather forecasters had not hinted at even a flurry, but Michelle found herself driving through a blizzard, snow swirling down around her car, adding to the already mountainous drifts alongside the road. Visibility reached almost zero, and Michelle strained to see more than a few inches in front of the car. No trace of tire tracks appeared on the road, which led her to believe her car was the only one to travel down it in the last couple of hours.
Why on earth did I take this blasted shortcut? she thought. God forbid I should use some common sense for once in my life.
Michelle was on her way to her family’s annual Holiday get together. It was the first one she had attended since she moved to New York with her now ex-boyfriend a few years ago. He never wanted to go home for the holidays, so she always stayed in the city to be with him. This year, after breaking up with her boyfriend back in May, Michelle decided she did not want to spend the holidays alone. She had always loved her family’s holiday get-together.
All of her brothers and sisters and their families came and so did some of her Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. The get-together usually lasted two or three days, with every one hanging out and having a good time playing games, watching TV, drinking hot cocoa, and roasting marshmallows in the fire place.
As her mind drifted to memories of past get-togethers, Michelle subconsciously began to depress the accelerator, and the speed of the car increased to one that was unsafe when driving on snow. The tires lost traction on the slick snow, and Michelle’s car careened off the road and landed in a huge snow drift.
