The Toy Shop

I

Sianna drove past the shop every day on her way to and from work. The bright lettering on the shop window read Adria's Toy Shop. The window display, ever changing and ever challenging, drew Sianna's attention in the same way that a magnet under paper draws iron filings into spirals of metallic fascination. It was today's display, though, which made her want to stop for a closer look.

Her eyes wandered to the shop window while her car idled in the peak hour press of metal, rubber and engine emissions and her heart shivered at what she saw.

A wooden 'X' frame stood in the centre of the display, a mannequin secured to it by leather thongs which held the rigid limbs spread-eagled. The mannequin wore a red satin thong and nothing else, its blonde head turned to the side, giving the impression that it was looking over its shoulder at another female mannequin, dressed in white satin. The second mannequin held an object in one hand that made the blood thrum in Sianna's veins.

Sianna started when the motorist behind her gave an impatient blast of his horn. Blushing, she stepped on the gas, moving through the intersection. She turned off the main street at another small crossroad and made her way back through the traffic to the store's parking lot. Sianna couldn't resist the allure of that toy in the window if she tried.

Arriving in the car park, the appeal seemed to fade, and Sianna sat, staring through the windshield, wondering what had possessed her to come back. She had never visited such a shop in her life. She bit her lip, stepped out of her car, and made her way to the door of the shop, pausing a moment on the threshold before she shook her head, silently chiding herself for being a coward, and walked inside.
