FIRST DAY BACK AT SCHOOL

Abby walked into school with her hair tied back, and her uniform set in place. It was her first day back from an eight week vacation, and she felt sublime. She understood how enjoyment could be made from an island getaway; she understood how life could become more the just the written page - it was the ultimate sublime that waited to be experienced.

Abby smiled and walked over to her groups of friend who seemed to have gotten into the pre-collage look.

“Hi!” she cheered as she approached them. “Starting to promote your ambition to flirt yourselves into college?” she questioned as she placed her bag down on the lawn, and sat.

“Eww... what's the stink?” questioned one of her friends named Brenda who was scented with a gross mineral spray, that smelt as raw as the body odor she was supposed to be hiding.

“What? It's baby bliss body spray.” orated Abby as she smiled over the sourness that she became hit with after having been whammed with her first insult of the year.

“It smells infantile.” murmured her other friend Ashley as she peered at her through a pair of high-gloss spectacles.

“What's up? You bang some dorks, and get their mental problem?” questioned Abby as she looked around at the cluster of friends who appeared to have become strangers.

“We're over pre-prep.” muttered Gail as she narrowed her eyes, and sent her a spite induced glare. “So take your baby bliss somewhere else – we're seniors now.”

Abby smiled through the moments that passed as a scratch was torn inside her mind. She wanted to laugh at the outbreak of nastiness, however as she looked around she knew her friends were not joking.

After the initial shock had passed through her mind, she slowly stood up, and began to make her way towards the school entrance. The cold wind blew around her body, and she could feel nothing but frosted skin - her insides seemed dead at the moment, there was nothing to be felt inside.

The school bell rang, and Abby stuffed all she could inside her locker, before she began to make her way towards class. On the way she linked eyes with many strangers, and she felt depressed that she did not know her school anymore. It seemed as though the whole community had moved, and had left her inside a place where she was all alone.

Abby walked into her first class, and quickly sat amongst the throng of students. She chose the middle seat, because it was always the mid-step between popular and unpopular. Normally she would try to find a hot spot at the back, however she was not in the mood for gab.

Abby picked out her books, and other items, from the main pocket of her school bag, and laid them out on her table appropriately. The school teacher, Mr Edwards, came inside the classroom, and smiled at the whole class. Abby smiled back as she desperately tried to get a positive vibe from a person who she had only seen temp her music class the previous year while the normal teacher was sick with the flu. Mr Edwards connected stares with her, and added what she recognized as being a smile upgrade just for her. Abby smiled, as her cheeks blushed crimson. Her nerves were on the edge, and the compliment just made her want to weep with joy at having found a common interest with at least one person in the school.

Mr Edwards taught the class in his usual style. He wrote his name in the corner of the white-board, handed out information sheets, and then turned on a video in order to get the whole class absorbed in their education. There was very little involved in the class activity, and everyone in the room just mentally slept throughout the whole duration of the lesson.

At last the school bell rang, and everyone picked up their books, and left quick-smart. A student who had been in a huge rush to go to the toilets for a short between-class smoke, nudged Abby from behind, and made her drop her books. Abby gasped, and then calmly waited for the whole stampede of students to leave before she even suggested a move towards the books.

Mr Edwards approached after having had seen the accident, and helped Abby pick up her books whose covers had been wrecked by dirt-smeared shoes.

“Tough end to a class.” he murmured as he pushed the books into her outstretched hands.

“Tough is an understatement.” she complained as she stuffed the items inside of her backpack.

“How did you find the class?” asked Mr Edwards whose stare lingered on the thigh that could been seen as Abby stayed kneeled.

“It was just fine.” Abby smiled as she lifted her eyes to see his gaze lost in a land far, far, away. “Movies are always a nice treat.” she uttered as she felt a tide of warmth inside her body strike as she felt relief that she could still appeal enough to be spoken to.
