A Secret Revealed
Colin Milton
"Hi honey!" Shannon's voice came clearly down the phone line. It sounded as though she was calling from the next room rather than the other side of the country. ""How's the conference going?"
"Hi! Good to hear you. It's going fine. I'm just about to eat. You just caught me." I replied.
"I'm going out with Jan and Rebecca in a little while so I wanted to catch you before you went to bed. What time is it there?"
I looked across towards the muted TV news channel for the time.
"It's almost eight here. Seems weird that you're three hours behind me!"
I heard her laugh. "I knew that you wouldn't appreciate a call when I got back from my night out," Shannon said, "you know how Jan and Rebecca can talk!"
"Oh yeah...I know alright! Good thing you're such a good listener!" I teased her gently, knowing that when the three of them got together that they could talk traffic to a standstill.
"You know what you're having for dinner tonight honey?" Shannon asked.
"Er...yeah...!" I replied, taken a little off guard by her question. I turned my head towards the bedside table where my evening meal awaited. A baby bottle full of warm formula and a large jar of pureed fruit Gerber baby food. A large terry towelling bib lay neatly folded between the two with a brightly coloured baby spoon on top of that.
"I'll bet you're hungry after your day honey..." she continued. "I'll bet you'll just have your usual 'trip' menu." She was correct. This was my usual evening menu when I was on a business trip. Shannon was referring however to my 'usual' menu when we went out for a meal...pâté; a good steak and then a gateau of some description. The reality of my dietary preferences was somewhat simpler and in many ways, more complex.
My eyes were transfixed by the bottle, jar and bib...you see, I'm an Adult Baby. Ever since I was in my early teens...since puberty I guess, I've had a deep and burning desire to be treated like a baby or toddler...around eighteen months old.
Of course, when I was in my teens, I just assumed that I was the only one who felt that way. The onset of adulthood and, of course, the Internet, led me to realise that it wasn't just me. That realisation came both as a relief and a frustration. Realising that I wasn't some kind of weirdo but knowing that my feelings would probably mean I could never reveal them to anyone else. It was a blessing and a curse.
"Honey...?" Shannon's voice cut through my thoughts. "You there?"
""Hmm? Er...oh yeah, just there was something flashed on the TV screen and it took my attention. Sorry sweetheart."
"Oh, OK...I thought the line had gone," she said. "Anyway, it was just a quick call to tell you I love you and that I'll be out tonight so there'll be no one home if you'd called."
"Thanks love...I would have wondered."
"I knew you would and I didn't want you worrying. Hey! Before I forget....I'll be able to pick you up from the airport tomorrow! My boss gave me the whole day off...said I deserved it for working late last week. So I'll be there when you get in at six!" She sounded pleased at the thought of having a day off.
"That's great honey. It'll save me getting a taxi home."
"That's settled then. I'll be in Arrivals when you get there... actually," she continued, "having the whole day off will give me the chance to tidy the spare room. I tried to get something out of there last week and I could hardly find a place to put my feet!"
My heart sank as she spoke. The spare room was where I kept all of my Adult Baby things. Everything that I'd collected over the years... magazines; books; baby toys and even adult diapers and baby style clothes that I'd bought from ebay.
"Oh, just leave all of that!", I said, trying to hide the panic in my voice. "I'll give you a hand over the weekend. Two of us will get it done faster than you could on your own."
I felt the colour drain from my face at her next words.
"No honey...it's fine. Jan and Rebecca have said they'll give me a hand clearing it and then cleaning it out. We're going to have a 'Girl's Day'! We're really looking forward to it!"
"But the..." I began desperately. "The..."
"Just a second sweetie! I think the girls have just pulled up onto the driveway. Got to go! Mwah! Love you...see you tomorrow. Bye!"
