The Ship

By Blyth Nyx

Brent Mathews piloted his small, class A frigate, the Mississippi, named after some ancient long dried river, towards the asteroid belt. A tiny toe ring welded to a chain hung from his neck, just visible beneath the collar of his uniform. He punched on the com. It was two A.M. Galactic Standard Time, or GST and he needed to make his report. There was nothing out of the ordinary on this belt that he could see. He twirled the tiny ring between his fingers and swallowed. He hated calling Katharine. It served as a daily reminder to all they had lost. A virus had wiped out most of the station, their ten year old daughter among the lost. He'd been out on long drift and hadn't known until a year later. She blamed him for being gone, but you went where the job sent you. Only a few were lucky enough to take their family with them, and he wasn’t lucky.
