Eyes wide open!

Alyssa, couldn’t believe what she was about to do. Here she is sitting in the middle of rush hour traffic, going to meet a man her common sense tells her she shouldn’t. Everything about him draws her closer to him. Like a moth about to enter the flames, she feels powerless to resist.

She can still remember the first day she met him. She was in the cafeteria eating her lunch with her friend Kelly. They were engaged in their normal banter. Kelly is much younger and perky, but Alyssa is much more fit and slender.

Alyssa notices Kelly eyes tracking someone or something behind her, with her eyes. “What’s wrong?” Alyssa looks over her shoulder.

Kelly reaches across the table and grabs Alyssa’s hand. “Don’t look.”

Alyssa turns back, “Don’t look at what?”

“Him, he’s here.”

“Who’s here?”

“You know who I’m talking about”

Alyssa looks back over her shoulder, “Who, him? We’ve never even spoken before, other then a brief hello.” She looks back at Kelly.

“Want me to get his number for you?”

“I didn’t work this hard to get my PhD so I can waste my time on campus picking up men for a booty call.”

Kelly leans in closer towards Alyssa, “And why not? When was the last time you had a toe curling, deep and hard fuck? I mean the sort where your eyes roll into the back of your head. When you dig your nails deep into his back, and get a fucking so hard you think he’s going to pound right through you.”

Alyssa blushes a deep red with embarrassment, “My sex life is none of your business. This topic is not appropriate for us to be discussing here.”

“So the answer is never?”

“Alyssa shakes her head, “You are incorrigible.”

Kelly glances up and then looks back into Alyssa’s eyes, “It looks like you have a private stalker.” Kelly flashes a mischievous grin, “He is sort of cute for a mass murderer.”

Alyssa pulls her hand away from Kelly’s tightening grip. “Oh stop it. We aren’t high school girls. Besides, he’s not stalking me. I run into people everyday on this campus and none of them seem to notice me. Why should he be any different?”

“You aren’t still bitter, are you?”

Alyssa becomes uncomfortable with Kelly’s new line of questioning, “I don’t know what you’re talking about and neither do you.”

Kelly presses the issue. “You know exactly what and whom I’m talking about.” Kelly lowers her voice to insure privacy. “You were engaged and he just broke it off. You deserved better then him.”

“I deserve nothing. Life is what it is. Phillip left and that is that. I have my life to get on with.”

“You call hiding in your work, getting on with life?”

“I’m not hiding. I’m right here if someone was interested in noticing me.”

Kelly reaches over and takes the pickle slice next to the half eaten roast beef sandwich from Alyssa’s plate. “Well if you dressed up a bit and did something with your hair, maybe a few of them would take notice of you.” Kelly takes a bite from the pickle and places it on her plate next to her untouched pickle slice.

“I’m dressed just fine. I don’t have time for your childish fantasies. I’m up for tenure this year. I have a hard enough time trying to get some of my student to realize the importance of proper business attire.” Alyssa picks up her sandwich. “You should start taking your career a little more seriously.” She takes a bite of her sandwich.

“I’m just a lowly adjunct. I’m barely above an intern. I don’t even have my own office.”

“Don’t hand me that. I started as an adjunct. You can always work on your doctorate here.”

“I’ll leave the glories of higher academia to you.” Kelly teasingly flashes a taunting smile. “I like the freedom of being a freelance computer consultant. I can sleep in late, most of the times or work in my pajamas if I wanted to.”

“So why do you do this?”

Kelly becomes serious for a moment as she pauses in thought. “I like the kids. I like looking out at them and seeing the fire and determination in their eyes. Many of them really believe they can change the world. I would like to believe that at least one of them actually might have a positive impact.”

“I do it for the money.”

Kelly puts on her best innocent act, “Oh we’re telling the truth.”

Both ladies break out in laughter. Kelly looks up and starts gathering her books and tray.

Alyssa asks, “You’re leaving already?”

“Yes I have to finish grading the exam for my next class. I’ll speak with you later. Fill me in.” Kelly turns and walks off.

“Fill you in on what?”

A masculine voice came from above Alyssa, “Do you mind if I share this table with you?” She looked up to see who was speaking. Before she could answer he was sitting down.

“Thank you.” He acted as if they had known each other forever. Looking into her eyes he added, “The way we line up for the food in here, you would think it would be eatable.”

She tries to look away, but his eyes seem to always find hers. “Well, it can’t be all that bad. We are all still alive.” She gives a light nervous smile.

He appears deep in thought for a moment as he searches his memory for her name. “So, Allie what are you majoring in?”

“It’s Alyssa. I’m not a student. Actually it’s Doctor Moore. I’m a professor in the School of Business. I teach ethic, and yourself?”

“Allie, that's a beautiful name.” He sits back in his seat and starts to unpack some papers from a briefcase. “Oh, I am neither a student nor a professor. I own an Architect and Engineering Company. I have a contract to redesign the library and the lecture hall for the School of Law.”

She braces herself to correct him once again on her name. She’s caught off guard when he reached over and laid his hand on hers. She pulls her hand back, “I’m sorry I don’t recall your name.”

“Jeff … Jeff Peterson.” He holds his hand out to shake her hand.

She starts gathering her things, “Well Jeff it was nice meeting you. I have to go prepare for my next class.” She stands up to leave.

Jeff stands up, “The pleasure has been all mine Allie.”

Alyssa doesn’t bother correcting him. As far as she was concerned he was a bit too forward for her taste. She liked her men a little more reserved. She could feel his eyes follow her as she walked out. On her walk back to her office, all she could think about is how she’s going to kill Kelly the next time she saw her. What was she thinking, leaving her alone like that with a complete stranger? She was so deep in thought she didn’t hear the fading voice of Jeff calling out to her.

Alyssa gets to her office door and starts to get her keys from her purse as she notice that her door is cracked open. She pushes the door open. Kelly is seated behind her desk waiting for Alyssa’s computer to turn on.

Kelly looks up, “Kevin is hogging the computer. I hope you don’t mind? Your door was opened and I have to post these exam scores.”

Alyssa sits down in the chair in front of her desk and places her things on the ground next to her. “No go ahead. I just had to get out of there. Things weren’t going well.”

“What could have gone wrong? You couldn’t have spoken with him more then a few minutes. He’s not some sort of pervert is he?”

“No, he’s just not my type.”

“How do you know? Did you at least get his name?” She pushes the keyboard across to Alyssa. “I need your password.”

Alyssa starts typing in her password. “His name is Jeff Peterson and he owns an architect firm.” She hits enter and pushes the keyboard back to Kelly. “He just seemed too full of himself.”

Kelly starts typing, “Because success and confidence are bad traits in a man?”

“He couldn’t even get my name right. He kept calling me Allie.”

“That’s cute. You look like an Allie.”

“I’m not a twelve year old. I’m a professor.”

Kelly responds under her breath, “Now who is being stuck up and conceded?”

Alyssa is caught off guard by her friend’s remark, “Excuse me?”

“Well News Week considers him one of America’s top ten bachelors with net worth over fifteen million.”

“Did you Google him?”

Kelly turns the screen so Alyssa could see it. “You really ought to think about lowering your standards.”

“Maybe you should logon and post your grades.” She turns the screen back towards Kelly and smiles playfully, “Brat.”

Kelly looks across at Alyssa and changes the subject, “Hey thanks for allowing me to move in with you. I really appreciate it.”

“Don’t mention it. I need the company, besides the extra room was just going to waste.”

“I’ll finish moving in this weekend.” Kelly starts entering her grades into the computer. “Are you sure there is enough storage at your place? I can rent storage space.”

“There is more then enough space. I have a huge attic and basement.”

“You’re the best. I don’t really have that much. I was renting all of my furniture. All I really have are my clothes, stereo and computer.”

The low fuel light on Alyssa’s car comes on. She can’t believe she forgot to get gas. She looks around and spots a gas station a few blocks ahead. She still can’t believe how that day played itself out.

Later that day Alyssa went back to the cafeteria. She was speaking with one of the cashiers asking if anyone turned in a set of keys. She hears a familiar voice from across the room.

“Allie.”

She looks across the cafeteria and sees Jeff seated at a table waving at her. She walks over to where he’s seated. He clears a space on the table across from him as she approaches.

“Hello Mr. Peterson, you didn’t happen to find a set of keys did you?”

“Yes I did. You left so fast I was unable to catch up with you. I was going to stop by the office and drop them off, but I got side tracked with a problem in the building design.” He stands up and motions for her to sit down. “Can I buy you a cup of coffee?”

“I just need my keys. I’m running late.”

“Nonsense, surely you have time for a cup of coffee?”

Alyssa sits down. I guess I can use a cup of decaf.”

He walks away to get her coffee. She can’t help but notice his nice ass. She scans the blueprints he has open on the table. They might as well have been written in hieroglyphics.

She notices that his briefcase is unlocked. She looks around, and sees that Jeff was ordering her coffee. She cracks open his briefcase to see if her keys are inside. Her attention is diverted by a title on one of his books in his briefcase; The Art of S&M.

She doesn’t know how long she had been staring into his briefcase, she’s startled when he comes up behind her and sets her coffee in front of her. “I was just looking for my keys,” She stated nervously as she closes his briefcase.

He removes her keys from his coat pocket and places them on the table in front of her. He walks around to his seat and sits down. “I’m glad I got the chance to speak with you again. You left so fast earlier.”

Alyssa starts adding sugar and creamer to her coffee. “It’s been a long day. I’m just going to head home and curl up with a good book.”

“I’m not much of a reader myself.”

Alyssa takes a sip of her coffee, “Is that one of your design books?”
