Sinful Symmetry

Derrick was scheduled to do his first book signing that day. Seated in the back of a chauffeured car, Derrick discovered he was extremely nervous.

It was one thing to do a phone or radio interview but these were the readers, the fans, he was meeting for the first time. Derrick tapped his fingers on the armrest,as the driver pulled into the lot and he climbed out as soon as the door opened. Smoothing his dark caramel jacket over his white starched shirt, Derrick tried once more to look the part of a confident novelist. Dark denim jeans for that casual air as he paused to admire the display of his book in the window. A large blow up of the cover, with his portrait in the corner, dominated the scene and a second flier beside tauted the signing today. Derrick's features canted into a self satisfied smile of disbelief, still shocked this was truly happening to him.

This was the culmination of childhood dreams. The place he never dared to believe he might reach, from the moment he first put a pen to paper.

Squaring his shoulders, a hand fell to the door and he entered quietly to be immediately greeted by the owner and his press agent.

The bookstore was called the Golden Laurel. Not one of the big chains, it was owned by Miranda Stevens and her and her staff had sold more of his novel than anyone else. Derrick was informed that the reason behind the success was Shannon. A petite 24yr old red-haired beauty, who also happened to be the assistant manager. Shannon traditionally closed the store and did the books at night. She had fallen in love with Derrick's book and recommended it to everyone she saw. She had blogged about it, tweeted about it and her reward came today. She had been assigned, more like begged, to be his personal attendant for the afternoon.

Derrick was flattered and could see in the girl's blush, the stirrings of an immediate crush as he was introduced to her. Shannon was charming and giggled at some remark of his before escorting Derrick to the table he would sit at, stacks of his novel ready at hand. Shannon had a tea ready, knowing he despised coffee and before the doors were officially unlocked they sat together for a chat. She loved books and gushed about authors she had read, comparing his work to some of her favorites causing Derrick to chuckle and her to blush even brighter. Her openness and admiration helped to relax Derrick and he was more than ready when the doors opened and the first crowd of eager readers flooded the room.

Shannon spent the morning at his side, greeting regulars by name and introducing them, as he signed their newly purchased copy. She kept the line moving, interjecting when the questions seemed too personal or out of line, sometimes just steering an awestruck fan away as the person stared slack jawed at Derrick.

Derrick sat in a daze at those moments, himself. He wasn't a Koontz or a Patterson, this was his first novel for god's sake. His grin soon became permanent and his mid overwhelmed with the joy of the moment.

He could tell when the guest wasn't a regular but a personal friend of Shannon's, as the girls would trade coy glances over lowered lashes. Their eyes flickering between each other and him and they would whisper and giggle behind their hands. When the books were set nervously before him, they would shyly ask him to sign "Love Derrick James."

The lunch break finally came and Shannon walked Derrick a block away, to a little sidewalk bistro where they ordered some sandwiches.

They spoke quietly over the meal and Shannon became a little bolder. She asked Derrick about himself and his career at the paper. Mostly she wanted to know, what this all must feel like, being thrust into the world of celebrity.
