It was a day in April I would never forget. The subtle scent of spring struggled to escape the prison of ice beneath my feet. Did I only imagine the heady scent of moist black earth? No, it could not be, not while stubborn patches of muddied snow still colored my path. I looked above; the tiny buds of plane trees shyly observed my progress. Unfortunately, the beauty of the world was non-existent to me. You see, I did not know if I’d see tomorrow. The war had cloaked me in a damp grayness that lived deep within my bones, shadowing my every step. Melancholy suffocated my soul. I lived only to eat and sleep, obtaining little pleasure from either. To outmaneuver the enemy, whom I could not discern from a friend, is what compelled me to continue, but I was tired.
