The Elevator

Alex Bishop was a confident man and a good-looking one. He knew both these things, yet he never let it go to his head. Being confident made his job as a sales rep that much easier and being handsome made him noticed by whoever he met.

As he rushed his bowl of cereal that day, he had no way of knowing what the future had in store for him. To Alex, it was just another day and hopefully a profitable one. He grabbed his keys and then left the hotel room, heading towards his next big meeting.

On the other side of town, Elizabeth Crow was also getting ready for a big day. She was a model and today’s shoot promised to be a big step up in her career. She’d just turned nineteen and after a slow start in the modeling business, she was finally being noticed. Elizabeth contributed her good fortune to the brand new portfolio she’d acquired just recently. It showed her strengths and impressed whoever saw it.

Each floor of the building they were headed towards was filled with unique business credentials. On the tenth floor could be found a Temp-Agency, which is where Elizabeth was headed. On the eleventh was a maker of universal keyboards, made for computers, which is where Alex was headed. They both met each other for the first time on the ride up to their floors and nothing was said.

Elizabeth got off first and sat waiting for her agent to see her. While Alex was introduced to the general manager, who he knew he had to impress.

Two hours later both Alex and Elizabeth were waiting for the elevator. Alex got in first, went down one floor and as the door opened to let Elizabeth on Alex spoke.

“We’ve got to stop meeting like this,” he joked.

Elizabeth smiled but didn’t understand his comment. Alex realized that she couldn’t have noticed him going up, so he kept his mouth shut. Five seconds later the elevator came to an abrupt halt, making each of them grab the rail around the center of the elevator walls. Alex reached for the phone underneath the control panel and lifted it to his ear.

It was ringing automatically in the security office. After fifteen seconds, it was picked up by the junior officer in charge. Alex informed him what had happened, and was told that the service man was on route. He was also told to sit tight and not to worry, as it shouldn’t take long.

After Alex had thanked him, he put the phone down and informed Elizabeth as to what was happening.

“It looks like we’re going to be here for a while, so, my name is Alex.”
