CHAPTER ONE
It was going to be a game of cat and mouse, but who was going to be the cat, and who was going to be the mouse? I had once again been recruited to reel in an elusive killer. This time, thanks to technology, it was all done through the magic of the Internet and e-mail. The other aspect that made this a unique and groundbreaking op was the government's willingness to allow me to use my homosexuality, if only on the Internet.
It all started when we got a tip that one Vadim Baklanova, suspected of five murders in Russia, including a National Security Agency special operations agent whom the Russians had borrowed from us to help in the investigation of Baklanova. The NSA was partnering with the Russian government in bringing this mass murder to justice. Despite all of the resources of both Russia and the United States, Baklanova remained illusive. The investigation had been going on for over two years.
We got lucky when one of our agents caught her son experimenting with Internet dating on a gay dating website. One day, Agent Emily Gold, coincidentally, one of the investigators on the Baklanova case, was scouring her 17-year-old son's Internet usage. She unexpectedly came upon an Internet dating site that he was using. After she got over the shock of it all, not knowing until that moment that her son was possibly gay, found several e-mails between a Boris Baklanov and her son. Red flags immediately went up. Could she have stumbled upon Vadim Baklanova?
She quickly brought it to the attention of her superiors. From what they could ascertain from Agent Gold's son's e-mail traffic, Baklanova, if it was he, was looking for a sucker to get him into United States. Agent Gold's son represented that he was 26 years old, needless to say, getting him grounded for practically life. In one of his last e-mails to Boris he told him that perhaps he could get him into the United States, where they could live happily ever after.
After going through agency channels, it was decided that it would be I, because of my known homosexual history, who would try to flush out one Vadim Baklanova.
I had to admit, right from the get-go, that this was going to be a lot of fun–even exhilarating. After going through the file the agency had compiled on Baklanova, I logged into a secure computer set-up specifically for this op, and I opened an account under the name Joshua Brinker, a 35-year-old gay man from New York City, looking for love.
It was very easy to find Baklanova's personal ad, thanks to Agent Gold's son, Michael. It read in part that he was looking for a long-term relationship with the right guy in America. He said that he was fluent in English. He didn't identify himself by name in the ad.
The first question I asked was: Why America? One of his victims was an American. Perhaps, I thought to myself, he had a beef with Americans as well as Russians and wanted to continue his killing spree once he got here. Emily, however, shot down that theory when she told me that they had kept the identity of our agent a secret. She told me that they leaked to the Russian media that our agent was a wealthy Russian entrepreneur
I wrote my first e-mail, keeping it simple:
Hi, I enjoyed reading your ad. You sound like a very interesting guy. It sounds like we have the same goals in life—to find that special guy with whom we can share the rest are lives with—living, loving, enjoying life. Perhaps you are the guy for me, and I'm the guy for you. Let's get to know each other and see where life takes us! Until then… keep smiling… Joshua
I left my office that night wondering if he would respond to my e-mail.
CHAPTER TWO
The next morning, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a long e-mail waiting for me.
Hi Joshua, thank you for answering my ad. I want to tell you about me. My name is Nikolay Chaldishkin. I am 25 years old. I live in Perm city, Russia. Perm is a very big city. About 1 million people live here. This is a River-port city. I am sending you pic of the Kama River and one pic of the church I used to go to. I think you never heard about my city. I was born and grew up here. It is situated in the middle part of Russia—about 1100 km to the north of Moscow. I hope you can find my city on the map.
Hopefully it is not a problem for you that I am in Russia? At least we can be friends. I contacted some people from America before, but they didn't want to talk to me, because I am not in the same city they are. Hopefully this is not a problem for you. Do you know anyone in Russia? If so, you probably know a little about my country.
I want to tell you what I am looking for in a guy. I am looking for someone who I can understand, who can be my best friend and partner. I am not looking for a one-night stand. I would be happy to have a friend, because I don't have any gay friends here and no one knows that I am gay but my family. We don't have places for gay people to go here. That is why I am glad I found this website. Even though I love Russia—I will come to America if I find someone for the sake of who I will leave my family and my country. I like living here, Russia is a good place and my city is very beautiful. But, as for gay people, this is not a good place at all. I've never been to America, but I know gay life there is much easier, so I decided to look for a partner in America. Russia is one of the countries in the world where people don't like gays at all.
I am younger than you, hopefully that is okay with you. For me, I am very comfortable with that. I don't want to have a young boy who will see other boys while we are dating, and one day leave me for someone else. I will never share my man with someone else. Also, I like older men. It's just my preference. Age is just a number.
I think I will close this letter here. I told you something more about me. I will wait for more information about you. I hope you are good person, and not like the ones I wrote to before. Don't get me wrong—I want to get to know you, but we need to exchange many letters to know each other better. Time will help us to get to know each other. I hope you agree with me.
Well, I will cut t here. Hopefully, I have not made you bored with my letter, and you have found it interesting. Please write me more about yourself in the next letter. I am sending you a pic of me so you can see what I look like. In the next letter, I will tell you about my job and family. My time is over and I should finish…Waiting for your next letter, Nikolay
So now he was going by Nikolay Chaldishkin. When I opened the picture of Nikolay, I was shocked to see that it was Vadim Baklanova. I couldn't believe that he had the balls to use his real image. He was a fugitive from the law in Russia, and he knew it. I had been in Perm several years earlier, when Russia was still the Soviet Union. Although it was, in-fact, a beautiful city, there was a lot of industry that caused a constant smog to linger over the city, and left an odor, that I was sure was full of carcinogens, slowly killing anybody that lived there.
I picked up the phone and called Agent Gold. She would be the person I would be reporting my findings to.
“I found Vadim Baklanova,” I announced.
“I know, I saw the e-mail. We tried to trace the e-mail, but this guy is good—very good,” Emily said, sounding more than a bit shaky.
“Are you okay, Emily?” I asked
“Yeah, it's just that it scares me to think that my son could have gotten himself killed.”
“I hear ya,” I sighed. “I hope he's learned his lesson.”
“Me too.” She managed to choke out.
“We'll get this guy so he can't hurt anyone else. I promise.”
“Thank you, Geoffrey. I'm counting on it—for me, and my son.”
“Any thoughts on his first e-mail,” Emily asked.
“He's very desperate,” I commented.
“Why do you think that?” She asked.
“It's obvious that he's very nervous. I can tell that from his rambling. In one e-mail, I feel like I've known him forever. That never happens in an introductory e-mail.”
“I see what you mean,” she said. “I can't wait to see what you get right back. Will you be just as chatty as he is?”
“Christ, Emily! You make it sound like two gossipy little girls.”
“Isn't that what Internet dating is? That's what I was always let to believe.”
“Maybe that's what it is in the straight world,” I speculated, because I had no idea what people talked about on straight dating sites. “In the gay world is all about the sex.”
“Oh, Geoffrey! Don't be so gross.”
“You'll see,” I laughed. “Now let me go and do my job. And please, no snide comments from the peanut gallery. Remember, I'm only following orders.”
“Goodbye Geoffrey. I'll talk to you later.”
I hung up the phone, turned to my computer and prepared my next e-mail.
Hi Nikolay! I really enjoyed reading your letter and seeing your pic. It's always nice putting a face to a name—and a very handsome face it is, if I may say so myself. First, let me assure you that, just because you are in Perm and I am in New York, is not a reason why we cannot build a relationship—because we can and we will. I very much admire your values of family and love of country. If you believe in fate and destiny, and that sort of thing, than you will believe that us finding each other is not an accident. Second, I want to tell you that I am a very romantic, very passionate person. When I make a commitment to that special guy, I will not stray from him. Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I look for what is inside a person. I look for a kind, loving, sharing type of person. I like a person who loves to laugh and knows how to enjoy life to its fullest. I also like a sensitive, caring kind of guy–one who can lean on my shoulder and cry when things get tough and vice a versa. Many of my friends tell me that I have set my sights too high—that that kind of a guy only exists in a fantasy world—I refuse to believe that. I know I will prove them all wrong. All of that said, age will never be an issue. I look for what is in a person's heart and soul. You and I are searching for the same thing—to develop a wonderful, lasting, loving partnership, to share our lives with a very special guy. Perhaps we are looking for each other. The question now is: Have we found each other?
I must tell you that I am very impressed with your command of the English language. There was a time when I could speak Russian half decently, however, I've not spoken or read it in over 10 years, and now I am sure my ability to speak it really, really sucks!
So, that's the kind of guy I am. Perhaps I'm being unrealistic, but it never hurts to reach for the stars. So take my hand and let's see where life takes us
I will write you more later. For now, take care of yourself. I'm sorry for the oppression of the Russian people when it comes to homosexuality. I promise that that is not the way it is here—and I hope to show you that some day! Sending you a big bear hug… Joshua
CHAPTER THREE
It took a few days for the next e-mail to arrive, and boy was it a doozy. Either this guy was a great storyteller, or he was so cocky, telling a version of the truth, without any fear of getting caught. I'd leave that to the experts to figure out.
Hi Joshua! I could hardly wait for your next letter. I'm glad you liked my pic! I will send you more later. I waited for your reply to be sure that you were interested. I am glad that it is at last Monday so I can write you this letter. The Internet café I am writing from is closed on weekends. Thank you for giving me some more information about you. Every letter will give us more and more information about each other. So far, your letter seems sincere, and I am glad you are not just into sex. Sex is wonderful, I like it, but only when it goes along with a relationship.
I didn't tell you in my first letter that I have grey eyes and blonde hair. I think it is hard to see in my pic. I am tall, so it makes my body kind of thin. My job: I work for a company that installs modern plastic windows in houses and apartments. I also install parquet floors. This is interesting work, and it is easy. I have been working here for three years and have a lot of experience. Do you like your job? Is it nice working a field you're interested in?
I want to tell you about my family and home where we live. We live in a four bedroom, one bathroom, one floor house—mother, father, sister and grandpa. Mother (her name is Sveta) is 44 years old, and father (his name is Ivan) is 56. Mother is a seamstress. She likes her job very much. Father is a seller in the local newspaper shop. He is going to retire next year. My sister has been studying to be a realtor. My sister's name is Lora. She's 21-years old and has a boyfriend. My grandpa is my mother's father. He's 77 years old. He's a very healthy man for his age. He fought in World War II. I am very close to my family, so I still live with them. I will, however, leave Russia and my family if I find Mr. Right. It is not easy spending all of your life alone. Loneliness is something nobody wishes for. It is also impossible to have a happy gay life here in Russia. I know it will be difficult to leave my family and friends, but I am at a crossroads—live with my family and be lonely, or live faraway with the man I love. My parents support my desire, even though it will not be easy for them to let me go. I will leave Russia when I am sure that I have found the right guy. I realize that I will have to begin life at zero in another country and it will be very hard for me. But I know this, this is life, and sometimes we have to make difficult choices. I would like to know more about your country. I read on the Internet today that once a year Americans organize gay pride. Really? I wish we had something like that in Russia. There are many gay people who never come out of the closet and they suffer all life long living alone or married to a woman. I was sure I was going to end up the same way until I found this great website.
I'm glad you can understand my English. I studied it in school and college for about five years. It was my favorite subject in college. Sometimes I have to use a dictionary to translate some words. Can you imagine me sitting at the computer having a dictionary next to the keyboard?
I know this letter is long again, but before I finish I wanted to tell you about my hobbies. I like reading. I like reading adventures and fantasy. I am fond of Harry Potter movies and The Lord of the Rings. I like sports. I go swimming sometimes. It makes me feel better. I like kids and animals. Maybe I will get a dog one day. I used to have one when I was a kid, but he got lost one day. It was a very bad day in my life. I enjoy watching movies—comedy and romantic mostly. I like all kinds of music, but my favorite artist is Madonna. I like good food. My favorite is broiled chicken.
Well, I will stop now. I will wait for your next letter, and more about you. I have enjoyed my time writing you. Till next time. Your friend Nikolay
There was so much information in this e-mail to investigate. One thing was for sure, Vadim/Nikolay, had an agenda. He even mentioned sex. I hadn't gone there, yet. It was way to early in our correspondence for that. He, however, was making it clear, at least to me, that he needed to get out of Russia as soon as possible. I wasted no time responding to his e-mail.
Hi Nikolay! I was very excited to get your e-mail today. Today is a holiday in America, so I didn't have to go to work. It was nice to just relax. I have been enjoying the Olympics. I especially enjoy figure skating. Tonight was the ice dancing competition. Ironically, one of the American couples met over the Internet. He was from Russia, she from the United States. They were both serious ice skaters, so he decided to make a leap of faith and come to the United States. They became competitive ice dancers. They started as partners on the ice, before becoming partners in life. They married in 2001.
You have a big family! It sounds a bit crowded in that house. It's a good thing you all get along so well. I will promise you right now, if you decide to leave your family, and your country, and come to the United States I will always be by your side no matter what! Let me tell you a little bit about my family. My parents, Joyce (age 70) and Justin (age 75) live in Madison Wisconsin. Although they live so far away, we get along well. They have fully accepted my homosexuality. I speak to them about once a week. I have a younger brother, Felix (46). He's married and has a son and a daughter. They live in Los Angeles, California. I also have a sister, Alexis (age 40). She has two daughters. They live in Chicago, Illinois. Since we are spread out across the country we now rarely can get together. As for me, I live in the Bronx right near the stadium where the New York Yankees play. My apartment is a large one bedroom. I have two lovable cats. My next-door neighbor is my best friend. We met at Dignity, the gay Catholic organization, about 10 years ago. Although many of our friends think we are boyfriends, I assure you that we are not, and will never be. In fact, that would be disastrous.
You asked about Gay Pride. Yes it is a big deal here. Gay pride is always the last Sunday in June. It's an all-day event. In the morning, a group of us get together and go to brunch. After brunch we go to the parade. Then there's a big festival. In the evening there's a dance outside on the pier that ends with fireworks. It would be great if you could be here to experience it next year!
As for my job, I work at a big law firm as a paralegal. I do all the research and paperwork for several lawyers. Although I like what I do, my true passion in life is my writing. I hope to someday publish my first novel. My other hobbies include reading (I am also a big Harry Potter fan), movies, going to the theater and cooking. I will make you a wonderful broiled chicken when you come to America.
I will leave you for now. Have a wonderful day! Your Joshua
We figured, that if Baklanova was the least bit skeptical, he would check out the information I was sending him. We had to assume that he would do his homework. If he was planning to make a clean get-away, he was going to have to be sure that he had a reliable sucker. To that end, the agency created the Brinker family.
Baklanova mentioned that he was sending his e-mails from an Internet café in Perm city, Russia. Our undercover agents went to every Internet café in Perm city. Every single computer was scoured for our e-mail traffic. The problem was that if the e-mails were being sent from Perm city, they weren't coming from one of the many Internet cafés. So, from where was he sending his e-mails?
Amazingly, he had told the complete truth about his family, including their correct first names. Of course, he hadn't lived with his family in over two years, and, according to a reliable source, his family had not had contact with him in that time. He was also truthful about what he used to do. Again, he hadn't worked in Perm city, or anywhere else in Russia, for over two years. He was in hiding, and on the run. During his killing spree, he also managed to accumulate a large amount of money from his victims.
This guy was sly, but I was going to be patient. I was going to bring this guy down. I was sure of it!
CHAPTER FOUR
The next day another long e-mail had arrived from Baklanova.
Hello Joshua, my new friend! Thank you for your letter! It is really nice receiving something from you. Yesterday, I went to the cinema and saw “Fog.” It was a tremendous film! At the most intense moments I wanted to take your hand but you were not there. I felt very sad. I wish we could meet for a cup of coffee or a cup of tea. Do you like coffee? I don't. I am a tea guy. I also believe in fate, so I know we will meet someday. For now the Internet will have to be our life. When the communists were put out of action, Russia moved slowly to become modern. My family still does not have a telephone in their home. I have never been outside of Russia. I don't travel a lot, but last year I was in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was a nice city, but very dangerous, with a lot of criminals.
I wanted to ask you: do you like water? I do. I like swimming in the river. I told you about the Kama River. It's a beautiful place to swim. Water helps to de-stress me. I can stay in the water for hours. When I broke up with my ex-boyfriend, I went to the river often, and it helped me to recover. I don't want to think about that now. Sometimes, I get sad that I'm alone and without like-hearted people who understand that being gay is not bad. We were born gay. Don't think I hate my country. I just hate the system that we were raised in, and how we should think about gay people. I don't hate Russia, because I was born and grew up here and had many good times here. I got a good education and have a good job here. I have my family here and I do love them. I have friends here whom I known since my childhood. I don't like that gay people are the dregs of society. I don't want much. I just want to love and be loved. I think most people want this, but many of them ever achieve it. Love is a thing that you can't buy in a shop. It's priceless. Love comes from heaven. Do you believe in God? I do. I am Christian and go to the Russian Orthodox Church. I don't know much about other religions, but I know that we have one God. I go to church sometimes, but not very often. I pray that I will find someone I can fall in love with and be happy with. I know it will happen one day! Maybe you? Who knows? I don't think that we could have just a long-distance relationship. I know that long-distance relationships don't work. Letters are just a way to get to know each other.
Are you a one-guy person? I am, and I hope that you are too. I am a very jealous guy, and I would never let my husband sleep with someone else. I read in the newspaper about swinging and how people exchange wives and husbands, with other couples. Maybe this is good for them but not for me. I think it is disgusting! I want my husband to be all mine. I hope that I will find such a person. To tell you the truth, I am kind of a shy person. I like the Internet as a way to get to know each other. It's much easier to open myself up to a person. I hope you agree with me.
When is your birthday? Mine is 25 September 1980. My horoscope is Libra. I don't believe in horoscopes. I believe in fate. Before finishing, I want to tell you about why I write you letters here at the Internet café. I think this is important. I don't have a computer at home. This is not expensive, but it is often very difficult to get online. This is why I don't write you every day. Don't worry. Keep writing and I will write back as soon as I can. I just promise that I will never make you wait long for an answer. Also, I am not able to write on weekends, since the Internet café is closed. I can hardly wait until your next letter…Nikolay.
He also included another picture of himself. I had to wonder, after reading this latest offering, if he was drinking vodka instead of tea. He rambled a lot, and repeated information he had already sent me. We knew that his family had had a telephone for a several years already. I'm sure he was anticipating that I was going to ask him for his number. I truly doubted his religious convictions as well. Anybody who was able to murder five people in cold blood had none. I had to laugh when he mentioned how dangerous St. Petersburg was. He had committed two of his murders there! If any knew how dangerous it was there, he would.
He also mentioned he had an ex-boyfriend. We already knew about that. It was in the case-file. I, however, wanted to pursue that further. I needed to hear his version of their relationship. It was time for another e-mail.
Hi Nikolay! Thank you for the great pic. You really are a cute guy! I will try to get a couple of pics out to you later this week. I look forward to the day when we'll meet in person—when we will be able to spend time together over a cup of tea (yes, I prefer tea over coffee). I can't wait until we can look into each other's eyes (my eyes are blue by-the-way) and talk about the future—our future. I do believe in fate! As I said before, there are no accidents in life. To answer one of your biggest questions, I am a one-man guy. I was in a relationship a few years ago. When I found out that he was cheating on me with several other men it almost destroyed me. His name was Drew. So yes, I find it very endearing that you are the jealous type. Although it is probably very painful, tell me about your ex-boyfriend. Perhaps it will help you to heal from him.
I am amazed that you still don't have a telephone in your home. I was fully aware that under the communist regime life was very much behind the times. I, however, would have thought that that little convenience in life would have made its way to Perm city by now. I honestly don't know what I would do without a phone. I, like most Americans, even carry a cell phone.
I do like to swim. You're right, it's so relaxing and stress relieving. I do believe in God. As I mentioned in my last letter, I am Catholic. I belong to a gay Catholic group called Dignity. I am also in the choir. I have met a lot of great people there.
Unfortunately, I must leave you for now. Have a great day! Your friend, Joshua
CHAPTER FIVE
The next morning, a response was waiting in my inbox.
Hello, comrade Joshua! My pulse beats faster seeing your letter, and it made me smile! I am glad you like my pic! Yesterday I watched the hockey match between Russia and America. It was a delightful and intense game! Our team proved to be on the winning side. Our countries are close on spirit. I hope that we too can become close. It's another day and another letter from you! Hooray! I want to tell you that I want you to be my comrade. You know what 'comrade' means? Here in Russia, comrade means friend and one who is respected. I called you comrade because I like and respect you. I like your correspondence. I can hardly wait until I receive your next letter. I am in a good mood today, and want to share more information about me with you. I am glad to have you as a friend, hopefully you're glad to have me as a friend too. Do you know that I have found another hobby? Try to guess what it is. It's getting your letters and sending you letters in return!
Although I love music, I don't like clubbing. I like dancing, but there are bad people in the clubs. There are many drunk people who go just to pick up girls to have sex with. Others try to start fights. Is it the same way in America? Do you like to dance? I especially like dancing at home. Sometimes, if I'm in the mood, and no one is at home, I will dance nude in the kitchen while I am cooking.
I told you that I wrote to people from this website before I met you, but you are different. They wanted just sex, and asked me to send them naked pics. Don't get me wrong, sex is wonderful but only when I am in a relationship with the person I love. I will never be sexually close to someone I don't love. I am a very caring and understanding person. You should know that there are many guys out there who are just looking for sex. They change sex partners on a regular basis. I'm very glad that you're not like them. I want a guy who will love me for who I am, even when I'm 80 years old and can't have sex anymore. I want a guy who will care about me, and show his love in his and acts. I want to hold his hand, and feel that he is my man. I don't want to worry that he will go to someone else. I will not rush you. We will go one step at a time and see what happens. I'm finding myself looking forward to your every letter. Every one of them makes me smile. I am writing to you, but no one knows that I am doing this. I didn't tell my family about you, but I think often that I should. I like you more and more with every letter.
Important! You didn't tell me when your birthday is. Please tell me in your next letter. I don't want to miss it. Okay?
Well, now I should finish, but first I will tell you some of my favorite things. My favorite food is Italian; my favorite color is blue; my favorite drink is Pepsi; my favorite TV channel is Animal Planet; my favorite singer is Josh Groban, but I also like Madonna and Savage Garden; my favorite season is summer. I like winter too, because I like to ski.
I will wait for your next letter. I hope my letters are not too boring for you. Looking forward to your next letter. Have a beautiful day…your friend…Nikolay
Rush me? Jesus—I feel like I've been hit a speeding bullet train! I'd hate to see what taking it slow meant to him. The man definitely had diarrhea of the mouth, but was this his true profile? There was no hint in his file that he was gay. I was all but certain, though, that he was. Only a gay man could write the way he did. He also appeared to be a very lonely man. So far, accept for money and jewelry, no one had come up with a motive for his murders. Were the men he had murdered been gay? Perhaps he had approached his victims with the premise of homosexual sex, and then he was rejected. This was a point that I thought was important in this investigation.
I called Emily and told her my theory, and why I thought it was important. I told her that if I had confirmation of my theory, perhaps I could steer my e-mails differently. She promised she would look into it and report her findings back to me.
Hello comrade Nikolay! I can't tell you how much I'm smiling right now! I am so happy that you are enjoying our correspondence. I feel as if an angel has entered my life! My birthday is March 13, 1970. I was amazed at your choice of music. Josh Groban is one of my favorites too. I named one of my cats after him. I also enjoy relaxing to the sounds of Enya. My musical passion, though, is Broadway show tunes. I try to go to the theater or at least once every other week. I look forward to sharing those experiences with you! Most evenings, after work, I love to cook in the nude. I live alone so I can be naked all the time when I am at home—and I usually am…wink, wink. After dinner, I usually sit at my computer and work on my book. On Fridays, I usually go out with my friends. I do enjoy Italian food and sushi, but my favorite food is a good steak. I'm not big into clubbing either, but I also like to dance. I look forward to having fun and dancing with you—perhaps dancing nude with you in the kitchen???
