Earth Mother
I had just moved into my new house with a backyard that bordered a national forest. I was unpacking the kitchen boxes looking out the window staring at the trees and the children riding their bikes down the path that led into the forest. The sun was shining and I so did not want to be inside putting things away.
Throwing my hands up in exasperation, I went upstairs to the bedroom and changed into my running clothes. What the hell, I might as well go for a short run before I went insane. Grabbing my cell phone, canteen, CD player and a power bar, I headed out the back door toward the path that lead into the woods. There was a bench at the entrance where I stretched all those muscles that need that kind of thing, and a map showing the route the path took through the forest.
I put my headphones on and switched on the music. The crashing sounds of Jimmy Hendrix cascaded into my brain as I started on my run. The path was wide and covered in crushed gravel. The running was easy to start as the path was on the flat. With each stride, I was deeper into the forest, the cool shadows inviting as the sun dappled path continued.
Rounding a bend in the path I was
suddenly presented with a fork, to the left the path went deeper into
the forest. To the right it skirted around the edge of the woods
with a small pond on the right. Today I chose the path to the right,
as there was a cool breeze off the lake. I finished my run right
where I started, at the bench where the path came out of the woods at
my backyard. In all I had run about four miles.
I stopped at the
map to check where the left fork in the path went but there was no
path shown on the map. It must have been an old path no longer in
use, I shrugged my shoulders and headed into the house to shower and
finish my unpacking. The day was fast becoming night and I had a lot
to do.
