Chapter One
Loryn stood out in the grove of silvery leafed olive trees surveying what she had completed so far that morning. The previous owner was only concerned with the picturesque value of the fifty hectares behind the house; the trees had been neglected for a long time. Ramón, the man from the next farm, had taught her how to prune the olives, and when she mastered that task, she would have him come back and teach her the next necessary task. The list was never ending. Every now and then, when Ramón saw her out working, he would come over and lend a hand, but he had his own place to run, so help had been rare in the months since she had arrived. It was a slow process, but she was determined to make the farm pay for itself. One day the life insurance would run out, and real life would return.
Ramón appeared, as if her thoughts had conjured him. He was a stooped man that had worked all his life but always had a smile for her. As he neared, she could see no smile on his craggy face this time.
“Ramón, is something wrong?” she called.
He kept walking to her, saying nothing before he was ready. There was no haste among the older Majorquin; she would just have to wait. He sat on the little stool that she had brought out with her. “I went to the doctor last month.”
A knot formed in Loryn’s stomach. She didn’t need him to finish. She knew what was coming. Ramón was over eighty. It should have been expected, but he had been the only one that came to greet her the day she moved in, bringing a round of farmhouse cheese. Then he had proceeded to teach her how to make her own, the traditional way. He had a cow or two and, once a week or so, would bring over some extra milk for her to make cheese. A young girl needs to eat well, he would say. She was thirty-four years old, not five.
