SECLUSION
It was early October, and the woods were ablaze with the colour of autumn. As we walked around the lake, we could see red, yellow, and orange mixed trees reflecting in its smooth surface, the world around us captivatingly quiet. We hadn't seen another human being since we arrived, just four days earlier.
Linda and I both had very demanding and high stress jobs and were both long overdue for a peaceful, relaxing vacation. Our friends, Mitch and Sue, had given us the run of their mountain side cabin for the week, of which we were a million times thankful.
The log cabin was located deep in the woods, in a small clearing at the edge of the lake. It was made up of a large living area, a small kitchen, and a small bedroom and bath. At one end of the living area was a large stone fireplace and at the other end sat an enormous couch with massive, cosy cushions and pillows, to the right, a single seat to match and on the left, a love seat that completed the romantic furniture. This room led to the Kitchen by way of a small arch behind the single seat where a small, pot-bellied stove sat within a rustic, stone countertop with wooden overhead cupboards and furniture to match. Since there was no electricity, we were required to use the fireplace and kerosene lanterns for light. Water was supplied through a pump in the sink, which was fed by a nearby spring.
The small sitting area in the kitchen led to a slot in the timber walls which gave way to the bedroom and bath. A huge wooden bed sat against the far end of the room with a small window behind it. A closet and a single chair occupied the other end. There was a little bank in front of the cabin and a small wooden pier extended about thirty feet into the water beyond. To the right of the pier, the surface of the water was completely hidden by cat-tails and lily pads and to the left, it was clear as crystal.
