My Stepmother

After my mother died of lung cancer (smoke related) at the age of thirty five, I withdrew into myself for a while. At the age of sixteen I found it hard to accept that she’d gone at such a young age, and vowed never to smoke for as long as I lived. Now that I’m eighteen going on nineteen I’ve finally come to terms with it, and am looking forward to my future.

My father had been dating in the last six months, and I was happy to see him back to his old self. I knew my mother would approve of him moving on, and that it was a natural thing to do. As yet though, I hadn’t met his new girl friend. That was about to change, as he told me that he would be bringing her home with him on the coming Saturday.

I didn’t know what to think about this, I mean I was happy for him but somehow I just knew I’d be comparing her to mom and that was a mistake. Towards the end of the week I decided not to judge her too harshly, and just see where it would lead. For all I knew I could end up really liking her, but the thought of not liking her was something I had to deal with.

When the time came I saw the car pulling into the driveway and waited for them to come to the door, which has to be said, was a very nervous time for me. When the door opened and they walked in I was shocked. She couldn’t have been more that twenty five, and to say she was beautiful would have been an understatement. I think my dad noticed my shock, but ignored it for the moment and introduced me to her.

“Kevin this is Caroline, Caroline this is Kevin,” he said.

“Hi Kevin, your dad has told me so much about you I feel like I already know you,” she said, holding out her hand.

“Hi Caroline, it’s a pleasure to meet you at last. Dad’s been very secretive about you, in fact he has yet to tell me where you two met,” I replied, whilst shaking her hand.

“We met in a library, believe it or not,” she replied.

“Oh right…where’s my manners, please let me take your coat,” I said.

We talked for a while and dad decided to make dinner. I learnt quite a bit about Caroline that first day. She was in her twenties, but it was twenty four not five and that she was studying to become a lawyer. She’d only recently moved to this area, as the law firm she was working for (as a copy typist) was the biggest in the country, and they had encouraged her to better herself.

We had spaghetti and meatballs that night, which just happened to be one of dad’s safe meals. When she later left for home by taxi, dad came through and immediately asked for my opinion.

“She’s very nice dad, but isn’t she a bit young for you?” I said.

“I knew you thought that when you first saw her, but what can I say she reminded me of your mother and the more we talked the more I liked her. She didn’t seem to have any hang ups about my age, so I didn’t want to show her any,” he replied.

“I’m happy for you dad, now all that has to happen is me getting my own place and you two can have some privacy,” I said, not wanting to be in his way.

“Son, Caroline and I have been talking about that and you have a place to live here for as long as you want it. I want you to leave because you want your own place, not because you think you’re in the way, because you’re not.”

We left it like that and the more I got to see Caroline the more I liked her, until eventually she moved in. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel strange that dad was sleeping with another woman, but that was my problem to deal with and had nothing to do with them. I soon began to realize why my dad fell for her, because I too saw a bit of mom in her from time to time. She would brush her hair away from her face the way my mom did, and talk to herself when she didn’t think anyone was around.

There were some uncomfortable times though, like when I was going for a shower and she opened the door coming out with a very small towel covering her privates. I found myself momentarily staring at her, but quickly apologized. Over all though there were no problems and we soon became a family. About three months after she’d moved in dad asked her to marry him, and she said yes. I was very happy for them, and knew that now was the time to find my own place.

I had an option to stay at the college, but there was no privacy and I wasn’t into all the drinking that went on at night. By the time the wedding came along I was still looking for my own place, but they never pressured me so I felt I’d find one sooner rather than later. The wedding went off really smoothly, and was a great success. After which they spent the night in the honeymoon suite of the most expensive hotel money could buy. They had a week’s trip planned as well but that wasn’t for another month.
