Calvin Richards wasn't drunk, not really. Maybe just a little. He really thought he had a shot with Erica Clarkson, the hottest babe at the party. The only babe that wasn't already upstairs fucking some guy already. Jason, his best bud and sometimes boyfriend, tried to discourage him from the idea.
“Come on, man, you're too drunk.” Jason said, pulling at Calvin's sleeve. “Besides, she's out of your league.”
“No way, man. She's not interested in all these other guys.” Calvin said. “She'll go for me though. I can feel it!”
Jason sighed, and let Calvin stumble towards the pretty girl. He couldn't hear what they were saying, but the look on Erica's face made it clear. She didn't want anything to do with him. She walked off, and Calvin stumbled back over.
“You know what?” he said. “Fuck this party. Let's go.”
Calvin and Jason had bummed a ride to get to the party, but their ride had long since abandoned them. They headed towards the highway to begin the long walk back to their part of town. The full moon shone brightly, and the night air began to clear Calvin's senses. After a while he groaned.
“I should've never talked to Erica, man.” Calvin said.
“I told you not to talk to her.” Jason replied.
“Well, clearly you were right. Unfortunately, I was too drunk to listen.”
“Maybe you should just stick to guys, and you wouldn't have this problem.” Jason suggested.
Calvin sighed. He liked Jason, but Jason was too possessive. He didn't understand Calvin's desire to play the field.
“Look, Jason, it's not that-” Calvin began, then stopped suddenly.
“What?” Jason asked.
“Shh!” Calvin said. “Did you hear that?”
There was a low rustling from the woods to their right. They saw a dark figure slink out of the shadows. It slowly padded forward.
“Shit!” Jason said. “It's a wolf!”
“It's a fucking huge wolf, then.” Calvin said. The wolf was easily half as tall as he was. Calvin thought that if it stood on its hind legs, it would BE as tall as he was. Suddenly, the wolf leapt at Jason.
“Shit!” Jason screamed, and turned to run. The wolf landed on his back, and threw him to the ground.
“Jason!” Calvin screamed. He looked around frantically for a weapon. Grabbing a small branch, he ran towards the wolf and whipped it at the creature's head.
The wolf turned its head in an instant and caught the stick between its jaws. Snapping them shut, the branch broke into pieces. Calvin panicked. There was nothing he could do. He ran towards the highway, screaming for help. He felt, rather than heard, the wolf's presence behind him. Turning his head back, he could see the wolf leap. He screamed one last time before the wolf tackled him. He hit the ground hard and could feel something bash against his skull, then everything began to fade.

Calvin woke up in a hospital bed. His mother was at his side.
“Mom...” he said weakly. She held his face. Her eyes shone with tears.
“I'm glad you're alright, honey.”
“Mom, Jason... the wolf...”
A concerned expression passed over his mother's face. “Jason's fine, honey. His injuries were more... extensive than yours, but the doctor said he should be out in a couple of days. The doctor wants to keep you overnight though, to make sure everything's alright. I'm going to go get the nurse, okay? You just wait there.”
“Alright...” Calvin said, but he was already drifting back to sleep.
The next morning Calvin was released, but told that he should stay at home for a few more days, and to not undertake any strenuous activities. Calvin readily agreed. He felt like shit, and wanted nothing more than to lay in bed. But after he got home he thought of Jason. It took him a couple of days to convince his mom, but finally she relented and dropped him off at Jason's house.
“I'll be back in a couple of hours.” she said. “Remember, the doctor said to not do anything... strenuous.”
Calvin blushed, and stepped out of the car. He had never outright admitted his relationship with Jason to his mom, but she seemed to suspect something was up. Someday he would tell her he was bi... but he wasn't quite ready to broach that topic yet.
Jason's mom let him in and he walked up to Jason's bedroom. He knocked on the door and Jason opened it. Calvin stepped inside.
“Wow.” Calvin said. “You look... good.”
