I circled left, then right, and then Taylor was coming at me.
I put my head down, like I'd been trained to do, and charged at him. I thought maybe if I could get a grapple on his body, I could take him to the mat, do an arm bar, try and get him out of commission. But it was no use. Taylor was too fast. He sent a glancing blow across my cheek, stunning me, then wrapped his strong arms around my midsection. We tumbled to the mat, all knotted up, our sweaty bodies pressed up against each other. My hands were all over Taylor's firm chest and rock hard abs, but I had no time to think about that now, while he was scrabbling to pin my leg. I kicked free and managed to get an elbow into the side of his head. I felt his grip loosen and I scrambled to my feet, panting and out of breath.
"That's it, Randy!" I heard Juke yelling from the sidelines. Justin "Juke" Phillips was our trainer, and he was watching the sparring match with his arms crossed, all too eager to point out our many mistakes. "Keep your hands up! Watch for the leg sweeps. Come on Taylor, you can't take that long getting off the mat!"
I turned to face Taylor once again. He was staring me down, arms in front of his face, his head with the short blond buzzcut bobbing up and down.
"I'm too quick," Taylor said, grinning. "You can't even touch me."
I didn't respond. Instead, I sent a sharp leg kick toward Taylor's thigh. The blow connected, the hard thump of flesh against flesh, but the exertion pulled me off balance. Taylor came forward and speared me, trying to knock me off my feet. I countered, rolling away at the last moment. But I was disoriented, and rewarded for my efforts with a swift flurry of jabs to the midsection. I felt the air go out of me and backed off, against the ropes.
"Come on, Randy!" Juke yelled. "You've got to protect yourself. Don't let your guard down. Attack him!"
I breathed in, and turned to face Taylor once more. I snarled. I danced forward and sent a long looping roundhouse toward Taylor, but I put way too much into it. He easily dodged to the side and I went spinning into the ropes. I felt him grab me from behind, his hands gripping my waist unrelentingly, and and he began to put me in an armlock. I struggled against it, beating at him with my free hand, but I couldn't break away. Once again, I felt my feet go out from under me, and we collapsed to the ground in a tangle of sweat and cursing. I could feel Taylor's crotch digging into my backside, jockeying for position. I had to admit I didn't mind the sensation, but I couldn't be thinking about that now. I had to win. I made a last ditch effort to throw him off, clenching up and bucking like a bronco, but it didn't work. Taylor was way too strong. He wrapped himself tighter around my arm, twisting and pulling, locking it back behind my hand. I shouted and cursed, trying to break free, but I couldn't. Finally, I relented, tapping the mat with my free hand to signal I was done. Taylor loosened his hold and let me free. I got to my feet, rubbing my arm gingerly. Juke climbed into the ring and stood between us, nodding.
"Good job, gentlemen. That was some intense sparring. Taylor, you've got to work on your footwork. Keep your back leg moving, don't get planted in one spot. And Randy, you've got balance issues to work on. You're falling all over the place today. A good opponent is going to be able to knock you right off your feet if you're not careful, exactly like what happened today."
