The sun was setting, painting the land in long red rays. Jesse checked the sunset’s progress, holding his hand up to his brow to shield his eyes.

“I reckon we’ve only got half an hour before the sun’s gone, Clint,” he said, starting to rush his motions a little more.

Clint grunted in acknowledgement and started to unpack the bedrolls.

“Woah, girl,” he muttered to his horse, a high spirited mare. She was acting up a bit because she wasn’t ready to stop for the day, but with the sun gone, that was that.

“No use riskin’ a broken leg,” he said to her, patting her on the neck. She calmed a little as he kept talking her down. Finally, she stopped shifting around, making his job a lot easier.

Jesse watched Clint for a little while, looking at his friend’s large muscular arms and broad chest work as he lifted and put things down. He admired Clint for a lot of things, not the least of which was his excellent skill at roping. Jesse had witnessed him win the West Championship in roping, and had watched people at the drinking holes bet against his skill, only to lose.

Clint felt Jesse’s eyes on him and grinned at him, flexing a little extra to show off his body.

“Jealous of these?” Clint flexed his arms, letting his arms impressively bulge out, “if you were a better roper, you’d have these too.”

“You’re no roper. Last I heard, you got dead last in competition. The calf damn near roped you!” Jesse teased as he began gathering up the firewood.

Clint scoffed loudly, placing his hand on the thick rope by his hip. In one swift movement, he pulled it out and began to swing the heavy rope above his head.

“What were you sayin’?” he called out to Jesse, neatly throwing the rope over his friend’s head and shoulders, drawing it tight.

Jesse stumbled towards Clint, tangled in rope and he shouted as he tripped and fell. Clint was laughing so hard he nearly missed catching Jesse at he almost hit the ground.

Jesse’s heart skipped a beat as he felt Clint’s strong arms wrap around him. He fell still for a moment, unsure of exactly what he was feeling, and Clint, suddenly worried, lowered him slowly to the ground.

“Jesse? You okay?” he asked, pulling the rope off. He breathed a sigh of relief when Jesse nodded. “Got me going there a little bit. I can be tad too prideful sometimes.”

He fully relaxed when he saw Jesse grin, throwing off the rest of the rope.

“You’d have to do better than that to keep me down,” Jesse said.

Clint laughed in a short, sharp burst, and announced, “We’d better finish up camp, it’ll be dark now in no time.”

The two of them split ways to finish up their duties, working by the last light of dusk. By the time the cold night had set upon them, there was cheery fire going. They sat side by side, staring at the light and heat, waiting for the meat to cook.

Neither spoke, content to just enjoy each other’s company and listen to the night sounds and the fire as they handed each other the food and drink. They had been traveling together for almost a year now, and grown close; the two cowboys clicked in a way that they had never experienced with anyone else.

Clint was the first to stand, slowly stretching his arms above his head as he yawned.
“Reckon it’s about time to sleep if we wanna be getting the herd over to the next grazing area,” he said.

Jesse nodded in agreement and moved to tidy up the food scraps.

“I’ll take care of the fire,” he said, banking the coals, “See you in the morning.”
