Chapter Fourteen
Andreas woke happily at his normal, early hour. Darius had been right. The museum event had been exhausting on many levels. He had slipped into sleep immediately and slept soundly. Thus, he was able to face his sparring partner with a clear and focused mind. The spars were the favorite part of any given day that he didn’t see Darius. Odigos was a dangerous opponent. That made the mock fights as much a mental challenge as a physical one. They were also different every day as they were learning from each other. Andreas was learning the disciplined style of the security professional while Odigos was picking up street fighting techniques. Afterward, they would share some fruit and juice as they cooled down.
“Are you passing along my moves to your squad?” Andreas asked.
Odigos smiled. “Yes, actually, milord. My Captain has been very interested in some of your techniques. You make good use of weaknesses in form. That is different from the way we fight which uses a formal technique that doesn’t often change.”
“Oh, I’m learning from you as well. Some of those formal techniques could be useful in a bar fight,” Andreas said.
“I’ll keep that in mind, milord,” Odigos said. His tone was dry, but Andreas could see the humor in his eyes.
“Will you give the Ladies a stern talking to before we reach Club Zero?” Andreas asked. “They are pretty safe there. I mean, Stu hires some really good security to keep the Calix safe. But I don’t want them wandering or peeking in corners.”
“Nor do I, milord,” Odigos said. “I will be most foreboding in my warnings.”
“Thanks, Odigos. Well, you get your breakfast. I’m going to get mine.”
Andreas decided to wait on his bath until later in the day, so he would be freshly groomed for the night out.
“Good morning, Lexo. What’s the news that isn’t in the paper?” Andreas asked as he was served a large, tasty looking plate of food.
“Good morning, milord,” Lexo replied as he poured the coffee. “From the number of morning messages, I’d say you made quite a favorable impression on the Calix at the event.”
“Messages?”
“Yes. I have been getting text and voice messages from the head servants of many households trying to find out about an invitation to your home for their masters or mistresses,” Lexo replied. “There have also been a number of inquiries as to your openness to attending dinner parties.”
“What do we do about them?”
“Since you are inviting at least 3 Cosi to your first party, there is a very finite number of Calix that should attend,” Lexo replied. “Only Calix of a certain status can mingle with the Cosi socially. Many of those inquiring do not qualify. Once they are informed about the Cosi in attendance, they will understand. You can let it be known that you will be entertaining every few weeks or once a month. That will placate most everyone.”
“My Ladies can come, can’t they?”
“Oh, yes, milord. Their families have been amongst the most powerful since Amara was founded,” he replied.
“Good. They are really looking forward to it,” Andreas said. “Can you help me pick who should get invites besides the Cosi and the Ladies?”
“Of course, milord. Here are your newspapers. “
Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Andreas was reminded to place calls to his former school and the group home where he grew up. He also needed to call Stu about the guests he was bringing that night. A call to Viktor and Hector was in order as well. His Crew would never be mistaken for high born gentlemen, but they were capable of behaving themselves. Andreas had to make sure they did.
The newspapers were amusing to the young Lord. There were a lot of photos of him. The photos of the museum event were what he had expected. His favorite was the one of him walking into the event with Lady Santorini on his arm. But there were a number that he liked. The most surprising was a very good photo of Andreas and Darius as they exited the restaurant. They were in good humor, and Darius had not yet put on his infamous sunglasses. It was a really good image of them that said a lot was still between them. Andreas was certain that Darius allowed it to be published. His arrogant Cosi was still marking his territory. In light of what happened the night before, Andreas didn’t really mind. Others would though. It was bound to be a very interesting day even before his date with the Ladies. All of that could wait. Breakfast was just too tasty.
After cleaning his plate, Andreas accepted a second cup of coffee and a scone to take to his office.
“Before I forget, is there any way I could get copies of some of those photos from the papers?” Andreas asked.
“Yes, milord. That is very simple,” he replied. “Shall I make a call?”
“Yes, thank you,” he replied with a smile. He marked the photos he wanted then went off to the study.
The calls to his head master and the housemaster went well. The discarded items from the apartment had been sold. The school bought new equipment and some better food for the cafeteria. The housemaster bought all new bedding and stocked the pantry. Andreas pledged to do more, but agreed that he had to be careful. Sudden riches can attract thieves of all types. Some Crews have been known to rob the school and the foundling home if it was thought they were flush with cash or expensive goods. It was something he had to figure out with Viktor and Hector.
It was during the calls to club Zero was that the day began to get interesting. Stu was predictably happy about the VIP guests and amused at Andreas’ position as their escort.
“Do you want me to have some of the guys mix it up to entertain the Ladies?” He asked while chuckling.
“No way, no how,” Andreas said with a groan. “First, they are very old Ladies. The music and the dancing will be exciting enough. Second, I’m bringing more muscle with me, and they may not get the joke.”
“Gotcha, milord,” Stu laughed.
“Thanks,” Andreas replied dryly. “Can you put Viktor or Hector on?”
“You got it. See you tonight...and thanks for all of this business, my friend,” he said sincerely. “It’s been a boon time for us.”
“You’re welcome, man. Hey Stu, wait. Can you give some thought on how to get more help to our school and group home without getting them ripped off constantly?” Andreas asked.
“That’s a tough one, but I think I may have an idea or two,” Stu said. “Let’s talk about it later.”
“Right. Thanks.”
Lexo swooped in with more coffee and another scone. He was already gone when Hector appeared on the screen.
“Hey, Boss. I saw you in the paper this morning. Pretty smooth,” he smiled. “I hear you’re bringing in some special guests.”
“Yes. You’ll like the Ladies. And the Doc is coming.”
“Cool! I can’t wait to see him,” Hector said. “He’ll be wigged by this joint. He’ll want to study everything.”
“I figured that. You can keep an eye on him? Don’t let him stare at anyone too long – stuff like that,” Andreas said. “And no talk about the gig. There will be some big ears there.”
“I’ll let the guys know that.”
“Great. Where’s Viktor?”
Hector rolled his eyes. “Sleeping it off. Some of the Calix were talking about you and Zoran fighting over Lord Galatea. Many thought his Lordship should take you both with him. He couldn’t pick a fight with them...”
“So, he got hammered,” Andreas muttered.
“Yeah.”
“Okay. Have Stu get some liquids in him – no booze,” Andreas said. “And get him to eat.”
“I’ll try,” he sighed.
“Wait, just get some liquid in him. I’m sending a car. Pour him into it as soon as it arrives,” Andreas said. “It’s time we had this out.”
“Will do.”
“I’ll see you tonight.”
“Right, boss. You be careful.”
“No worries. I will.”
Andreas took his cup and plate to the kitchen. Lexo was just putting loaves of bread into the oven.
“Lexo, I need to send a car to Club Zero to pick up Viktor,” Andreas said.
“I’ll take care of that right away, milord,” he replied.
“And do you have anything for a hangover?”
“Are you feeling ill, milord?”
“No, it’s for Viktor.”
“I see. Yes, I do,” Lexo said. “I’ll send the car out then make some juice and a nice soup. Is there anything else?”
“I need to order an outfit for Viktor for tonight. He’s my size but about three inches shorter,” Andreas asked.
“That sounds correct,” Lexo said. “If he will be changing here, I suggest he soak in the tub. That will help with his malady. He’ll be able to fit in one of your robes. Shall I set up the guest bathroom?”
“Please...that would be great. Thanks, Lexo.”
“Not at all, milord. Leave everything to me.”
Before Andreas picked up one of the journals to read, he decided to call Darius. It wasn’t really necessary, but the idea felt right. The Cosi’s vibrant blue eyes were intensely curious when he appeared on screen.
“What can I do for you, Andreas?” Darius asked. His deep, melodic voice had a hint of playfulness to it.
“So many things that are better than what I have planned this morning,” Andreas sighed. “I’m having Viktor over to clear the air.”
“Oh? Why now?”
“He got drunk last night in response to talk about you and me and Zoran at the Club,” Andreas said.
“You do not allow drunkenness,” Darius said.
“No. Leaves a man open to too many mistakes,” Andreas muttered. “He’s a founding member of the Crew. He knows better than this. Considering his behavior and that we are changing our schedule, I don’t think I should wait.”
“No, you shouldn’t. What would you have of me?”
“I just wanted you to know,” Andreas replied with a small smile.
“I understand,” Darius replied with a smile of his own. “And I appreciate it. Take care, and ask for help should you need it.”
“I will. I promise. Have fun tonight.”
“You, too...but not too much fun,” Darius smiled.
“I might say the same,” Andreas muttered wryly.
Darius chuckled. “Until tomorrow, exquisite one.”
“Until tomorrow.”
Andreas felt better just talking to his Cosi. He could calm him and encourage him with just an expression or a few words. Touch wasn’t even necessary to make Andreas feel elated. Why couldn’t his closest friend be happy that he found something so incredible? Andreas sighed. He took to his day bed with the latest journal and read for a time. There were two interruptions. Hector called to tell him that the car had successfully picked up Viktor. The second was Lexo telling him that he was coming up in the elevator.
Andreas rose and stretched. By the time he reached his dining room, Viktor was being shown inside. He looked like hell His skin was very pale. There were dark circles under his dark eyes. And his hair was an even more shaggy mess than usual. Viktor frowned at him.
“What’s so damned important that you drag me across town?” He demanded though in a soft tone. Andreas had no doubt that his head hurt.
“You are, idiot,” Andreas muttered. “You know the rules about getting wasted. You helped write them.”
“You brought me here to bitch at me, your Lordship?”
“Yes, and to put your head back on straight,” Andreas replied. “Come with me, now. And quit with the Lordship bullshit.”
Andreas seldom took such a terse tone with his good friend. Viktor had enough brain function to know this was serious. He followed him into the guest room and then into the bathroom.
“Get into the tub. The towel in the ice water is for your head,” Andreas said. “Get in and put the towel on your forehead. Then, call for me. My man will be in with a pitcher of something to drink to make you feel better.”
Andreas turned and left the room. He found he was even angrier than before. Lexo had left him another cup of coffee on the dining room table with a scone. He sat and enjoyed the offering while reading the rest of the papers.
“Milord, Mr. Stamos is settled in the tub. I turned on the heater and the whirlpool, so the water will stay nice and hot. He’s had a glassful of a lightly sweetened vegetable juice with plenty of ice,” Lexo said. “That will give him the water, vitamins and minerals he needs. He has the cold cloth on his forehead.”
“Thank you, Lexo.”
“Not at all, milord. He may want to sleep after the bath, so I’ve turned down the bed,” Lexo continued. “The clothes you’ve ordered for him should arrive in a couple of hours.”
“Good,” Andreas replied. “I’m going to talk with him for a while. Only you or Darius can interrupt. I told Darius he’s here, but he may want to stop in.”
“Very good, milord,” Lexo said. Andreas could tell that the Major Domo was very pleased with him.
Viktor looked very relaxed in the tub. His head was tilted back. The cloth was covering his forehead and his eyes. Andreas took a seat on the chair by the vanity.
“How are you feeling?”
“Better. That juice is really nice,” Viktor replied. “And this tub is something else.”
“Enjoy it,” Andreas said. “But you’re going to have to hear me out.”
“You’re still the boss,” Viktor shrugged.
“We’ve known each other since we were really little,” Andreas began.
“You saved my ass when we were six,” Viktor smiled. “Toughest little bastard I ever met.”
“We stuck together through school...me, you, Stu and later Hector,” Andreas continued quietly. “A mix of brains and muscle that kept us all safe in Eris – in that hell hole – until we could crawl out.”
“Kacia was harder in a way. The rivals were smarter,” Viktor murmured. “The violence was more focused. But you always saw through the bullshit when they were after us. You always found the opportunity no one else was looking at.”
“We each had a skill for the Crew,” Andreas said. “I never stop thinking about what will get us ahead and what will keep us safe. When I was being hunted, I was working the gig so we would have the best chance of succeeding with our hides intact. The whole time I was in the Penthouse, I was working the angles of that gig.”
“I know that,” Viktor said. He took the cloth from his eyes to really look at Andreas.
“I haven’t changed toward the Crew, have I?”
“No. Of course not.”
“You know how clearly I can hear what anyone is saying to me,” Andreas said.
“It’s amazing how much you can hear.”
“I still can hear everything, Viktor. I know exactly what the fine folks at that museum event were thinking about me,” Andreas said. “I knew I could handle Zoran from the first word he said to me.”
“Why are you telling me this? Do you think I’ve forgotten what you can do?”
“Yes. I think you have.”
“Why?”
“You seem to think that I don’t know in my bones that Darius means me no harm,” Andreas said with a quiet edge to his voice. “You don’t even think I can have a friendship with him. You seem to believe I can’t think for myself anymore.”
“I never said that. I never even thought that!”
“So you know that I can still hear all I need to hear and that I have my own mind,” Andreas murmured. “You know that I was the one who provoked Darius. He didn’t know who I was until that night. I rattled his cage hard – twice.”
“Yeah...you did. I still don’t know why. You didn’t need his money or his power,” Viktor said. “You never cared about status – just the next gig.”
“It’s really simple, Viktor. I saw him walk in, and it was like being hit by lightning,” Andreas murmured intensely. “I wanted him. It’s as simple as that. He was big, gorgeous and hotter than anything I’ve ever seen.”
“But why did it have to be a Cosi? They are the cause of all misery on this planet,” Viktor spat.
“He didn’t have to be a Cosi. He just happened to be one,” Andreas said. “I was content to go through life without ever having met one in person though I never saw them as the cause of all misery here. Why did you agree to work with Mykos Estevan when you felt that way?”
“You asked me to, and they were coming to us for things they needed. We weren’t crawling to them,” Viktor replied. “Why didn’t you work with them?”
“I thought it best that I focus on the gigs. It takes a lot to make sure they run smooth and safe for the Crew,” Andreas replied. “I always have to see all the ways they can go wrong to make them run right. “
“Yeah...you never lost focus. Even with him.”
“And where did this interest in me come from? I never heard it in your voice,” Andreas said pointedly. “You’ve seen me naked. You’ve seen me do it. Hell, we’ve shared a bed more than once. You never even got hard around me. I would have known. What is all of this about?”
Viktor looked indignant. “Maybe it was you taking up with that Cosi that made me really think about you. But I do feel the way I feel.”
“I’m sorry, Viktor,” Andreas said sincerely. “You will always be the person I think of as closest to me. But I don’t feel attracted to you that way. I know as well as you do that there are many men and women who would love your attentions.”
“I suppose...yeah, that’s true,” he replied. “I’ll keep it in mind.”
“And while you’re thinking, do you really respect me?”
“You don’t need to ask that!”
“Then, respect my choices – all of my choices – of friends or lovers, Viktor,” Andreas said emphatically. “I need that promise from you.”
“For you, boss. I can do it.”
“I hope so, Viktor,” Andreas said quietly. “You know how it is for me. I have to be able to trust you no matter what.”
“No matter what?”
“It’s easy to say that you trust my choices while I’m not with Darius,” Andreas said wryly. “I need that trust no matter what is going on in my personal life.”
Viktor looked at Andreas pointedly for a long moment.
“He hasn’t let you go,” Viktor whispered.
“He tried,” Andreas countered. “He tried very hard. It was the only time I fought him. I fought very hard, Viktor. I wouldn’t let him let me go.”
“Why?”
Andreas smiled despite himself thinking about how arrogant and exasperating his Cosi could be in one moment. Then, he could be frightening and then utterly endearing. It was so hard to explain. It just was.
“Never mind. It’s better that I don’t know,” Viktor sighed. “I give, boss. I may never like him personally, but I will respect your choices. You can still trust me.”
Andreas listened carefully. He heard something of his old friend in his voice.
“Okay,” Andreas murmured. “Do you feel any better? Would you like some food?”
“Food...no. I could drink some more juice,” he replied. “And I feel really tired again.”
“Have some juice and catch a nap,” Andreas offered. “We don’t have to be anywhere until six. It’s not even close to noon.”
Viktor yawned mightily then he chuckled.
“Don’t mind if I do,” he said softly.
Andreas stayed long enough to make sure Viktor could get out of the tub and dry himself. As he left, his friend was falling into bed and pulling up the covers. It all seemed to work out, yet Andreas felt sad. The reason was hard to put his finger on. Viktor seemed to be sincere in that he believed what he was saying right then. But Andreas sensed that he yielded to keep their friendship. He realized that he didn’t trust him enough to really talk about what was between him and Darius. He felt as though he had to protect Darius from Viktor. Still, he wasn’t ready to completely push his friend away. Viktor was strong. He could always handle the worst that was thrown at him. Andreas owed it to that friendship to let him figure out a way to deal with Darius in his life.
Andreas found that Yannis was with Lexo in the dining room with a pile of notes.
“Hey guys. What’s all this?”
“Lexo isn’t the only one being contacted by Calix wishing an invitation to your parties,” Yannis replied dryly. “I thought I’d deliver them personally.”
“And check up on me for his Lordship,” Andreas added as he sat down. “I’m fine.”
“Are you, milord?” Yannis asked gently.
Andreas nodded. “Let’s say that I will be.”
“Well put,” Lexo said. “Would you like to make your guest lists right now?”
“That sounds like fun,” Andreas snorted. “Yeah, let’s do it.”
The task proved interesting to the young Lord. The servants took the opportunity of making the lists to further instruct him on the nuances of the Calix and their hierarchy with each other. To avoid offending anyone, they decided that four parties would cover all of the relevant Calix and allow the elderly Ladies to attend all of them should they choose. He would have the servants send advanced word on who was invited when and that Andreas was open to accepting invitations provided he could bring a companion. He figured he would take one of the Ladies to each event since Darius wouldn’t socialize with most of that list.
“You should only hand write a few of the invitations – say to the Cosi and the Ladies. You can have the others done by a calligrapher,” Lexo said. “They are beautifully handwritten, so no one will feel slighted.”
“However, you should hand write the thank you notes,” Yannis added. “But you have a few weeks after the event to send your notes.”
“Right. Wow, how long will I be this popular?”
“I think you will be so for quite some time,” Lexo said. “Perhaps indefinitely. You showed a great deal of grace in your encounter with Zoran. And you were very kind to your Ladies. The Calix expected you to be crass and feral. You were better behaved than they often are.”
“Unless tonight is a disaster,” Andreas muttered darkly.
The servants chuckled.
“You wouldn’t have agreed to escort the Ladies there if there were a hint of danger,” Lexo said with a smile.
“Indeed,” Yannis added. “You have given them all a new lease on life, milord.”
“How’s that? They are so sweet, I would think they were very popular.”
“They had gone out of fashion along with their time, I’m afraid,” Lexo said. “All they had were each other and their tea parties. Now, they’ve gone to their hairdressers twice in a week.”
“They’ve been to their tailors again,” Yannis added. “All of this attention is doing wonders for them. They are getting invitations as well.”
“I’m glad I’m not something they just put up with,” Andreas murmured. “Yannis, do you think Darius could score a table at Chef Alaria’s new place. The Ladies would love that.”
“I’m sure he could and would, milord,” Yannis replied.
“You should ask them to take you to the theater,” Lexo said. “You have a permanent box there.”
“I do? What’s a box mean at the theater?”
“They are well placed, private seats with an excellent view of the stage and the rest of the theater,” Yannis replied.
“To see and be seen, no doubt,” Andreas commented.
“Exactly,” Lexo replied. “Those Ladies are patrons of the lively arts. You could learn a great deal from them.”
“Great idea....do you think I could ever have parties where I mix Calix with my Crew?” Andreas asked.
“There are ways, I’m certain. But you should get your footing socially in Amara first,” Yannis advised.
“Yeah. I shouldn’t get ahead of myself,” Andreas murmured.
They soon had the lists sorted out. The first party would be with the Ladies, the Cosi and a dozen of the most prominent Calix. The balcony would be covered with an awning and weatherproofing. A fire pit would keep it warm. They made the lists for the rest of the parties as well. Being very formal would serve Andreas well. He could conduct his social activities by the rules of the hierarchy without attracting criticism.
“Guys, I have a problem that I need advice with,” Andreas said. “You guys are good at solving problems.”
“Thank you, milord,” Lexo said. “What is the problem?”
“Now that I have all this money, I’d really like to do something for the school and the foundling home that raised and taught me,” Andreas said. “But Eris is so corrupt, anything new could attract robbers. I was there when a gang ripped new plumbing out of the building. I want to help, but I don’t want to cause the kids to go through terror.”
“That’s why you were so careful with the cast off goods from this apartment,” Yannis said.
“Yeah. What can I do?”
“You could give the students and the teachers something that can’t be converted to cash,” Lexo said. “You could have them come to one of the hotels and have classes of all sorts. For the students, they could begin to learn a trade from actual tradesmen and craftsmen while the teachers brush up on techniques from university professors.”
Andreas brightened. “I like that. I could pay for the classes. The kids could learn that there are other ways to make a living besides a gang.”
“You could make sure it’s a well catered event for all,” Yannis said.
“And you could do things for the school and the home like upgrading the roof and the doors and windows,” Lexo said. “But a larger effort is needed to make those places less of a target, milord.”
“Like what?”
“Perhaps community centers that offer goods and services for the poor. If you put one in each territory controlled by a gang and made sure the gang had an interest in protecting it...” Yannis suggested. “Some of the young people I’ve trained have told me that a bag of rice or some flour and sugar would have made such an impact.”
“I’m an idiot,” Andreas muttered. “Of course the gangs have to get a cut. I like the community center idea, too.”
“Your Ladies would enjoy assisting with such a charitable endeavor,” Lexo said. “They could help with the classes as well. There are many in Amara who want to aid Eris but didn’t know how. This burden should be shared.”
“I daresay that Lord Galatea would sanction it and assist it as well if you were to ask him,” Yannis added.
“I will, but I want to organize it first. I’ll talk to the Ladies about it when we have our fancy lunch,” Andreas said. “Thanks, guys. This was really bothering me. Oh, one more thing. My sisters’ children...”
“For now, let your solicitors handle their needs,” Lexo advised. “I think you should give them a few months to mourn before approaching them personally. In the meantime, you could write them and have the solicitors read them the letters. Let them know they won’t be forgotten.”
“Yeah...I think that would be best.”
“We’ve made an excellent start, milord,” Yannis said.
“Indeed, we have,” Lexo agreed. “Why don’t you rest until lunch? Perhaps Mr. Stamos will be up to joining you.”
“I think I’ll do some reading in the study,” Andreas said. “Steer Viktor there if he wakes up before lunch. Thanks, guys.”
By the height of the sun when Andreas looked up from the journal, he could tell that it was about one o’clock. And Viktor was peeking inside the study.
“Hey, I couldn’t find my clothes – just this robe,” he said.
“Lexo probably took them to be cleaned,” Andreas murmured as he sat up. “He does that. Come in and have a seat.”
“Still expanding your mind?” Viktor asked.
“Not exactly. This is one of my mother’s journals,” Andreas replied. “She and my father wrote to me from before I was born until just before they died.”
“Isn’t that really sad?”
“Some of it, I guess,” Andreas replied softly. “I’m learning a lot about their choices and the Calix. You know, they used to come to Club Zero a couple of times a month.”
“You’re kidding me?”
“They did. Sat at a corner table and watched us. They thought highly of the Club and of Zed Crew,” Andreas said. “Mother called us roughhewn gentlemen. Father was impressed with how we worked. That was how he decided to give me the title and the businesses.”
“That’s really cool,” Viktor said with a smile. “And surprising.”
“Surprised me for sure,” Andreas smiled.
“Excuse me, milord, Mr. Stamos,” Lexo said as he leaned in. “Would you like some lunch?”
“I could eat,” Viktor said.
“How about some of that great soup and one of those sandwiches?” Andreas asked. “He makes the bread and slow cooks the meat. It’s amazing.”
“You’re very kind, milord. I’ll set it out in about 30 minutes,” Lexo smiled.
Viktor was gazing intently at Andreas as the servant left.
“Can I ask you something without making you mad?” He asked quietly.
“Probably,” Andreas replied. “What is it?”
“Is everything that is said about Lord Galatea wrong?” He asked. “Is he a lot nicer than everyone thinks?”
“No, Darius is the evil bastard that everyone says he is,” Andreas replied with a wry smile. “As scary as the average person believes he is, the truth is many, many times worse. He is cold, arrogant and brutal. That temper is for real. None of that has ever been aimed at me, Viktor. He has never even raised his voice to me.”
“But he took advantage of your situation to claim you, didn’t he?”
“Yes, he did,” Andreas admitted. “But he didn’t want to claim me that way. That first meeting...allowing me to call him by his first name...was all about seducing me. He wanted me to walk in to being his Dami without any pressure. He was actually very annoyed that he didn’t get to seduce me the way he wanted.”
“He was that sure he could get you to do that?” Viktor asked quietly.
Andreas looked at him levelly. “He wasn’t wrong, Viktor.”
His Second nodded.
“Okay, this makes more sense to me,” Viktor murmured. “I couldn’t see you wanting to stay with someone who had used your situation to take you. Why did he release you from serving him?”
“Darius wanted me to be free claim my title and inheritance. He was certain that I wouldn’t be taken seriously with the collar and the tag. He was right about that,” Andreas replied. “He also thought that I wouldn’t want to be his Dami once I had lived as a Lord for a time. He was so wrong about that.”
“Why aren’t you together now?”
Andreas sighed wistfully.
“The time isn’t right yet,” Andreas murmured. “My hold on the businesses is solid. I’ve had my first event, but I haven’t had any Calix here...”
“You’re having the Crew here before the Calix?” Viktor asked with a smile.
“Of course,” Andreas replied. “But I need to mingle with the Calix more.”
“When will you be together again?”
“I don’t know,” Andreas said honestly. “There isn’t a set time. Let’s get some food.”
“Sure. Thanks for talking about this,” Viktor said.
“I’m glad we did,” Andreas smiled. “Come on.”
Lexo was setting out the food when they entered the room.
“The delivery from the tailor arrived just a few moments ago,” he said. “I’ve set up everything for Mr. Stamos.”
“Thanks, Lexo. And this all looks great,” Andreas said.
“What did he set up for me?”
“I ordered you a new outfit for tonight,” Andreas replied. “I wanted you to come with me to pick up the Ladies.”
“I’ve never had clothes from a tailor. Sweet.”
The men lapsed into silence while enjoying the food. Viktor had a look of pure bliss from the first taste of the soup.
“Told you it was good,” Andreas said.
“Your man is really good,” Viktor admitted. “Can he do everything?”
“I think he can. He even came up with a way for us to help the school and the foundling home,” Andreas replied.
“No way. How?”
Andreas explained as they finished the meal. Viktor listened carefully. He nodded his head a lot.
“You know, I hate those gangs so much that I never thought of a payoff,” Viktor said.
“I know. I hate them, too. But that’s the way to do it.”
“Do you think they’ll actually protect those buildings?”
“That’s when being close to a Cosi comes in handy,” Andreas smirked. “They can enjoy the payoffs and do what we need them to do or disappear.”
Viktor laughed. “I almost hope they screw it up.”
“Me, too,” Andreas muttered. “But that wouldn’t help the school or the home.”
“No, but I can dream, can’t I?” Viktor asked.
Andreas laughed. He then relaxed with his friend for the first time that day.
Darius was concerned about Andreas as he rang off the call. His former Dami was safe enough physically. He was concerned about Andreas being hurt by his good friend emotionally. Interference was not an option. What was between the Young Lord and Viktor had to be settled by them. If there was pain, it was pain he needed to feel. Despite all who have counseled him to take care, Darius sensed strong resistance toward permanently distancing himself from Viktor. Some pain now could spare him profound trauma should Darius be forced to move against the Second. Still, Darius was anxious to find out how Andreas was faring, and he was very pleased when Yannis asked if he could be spared long enough to visit Lexo. There was something said about inquiries about invitations, but Darius hardly cared. He was just pleased that his most trusted men would be close to Andreas.
Thus, Darius was left with a pot of his favorite tea and a tray of sandwiches and a pitcher of cool water within easy reach in his office. There, Darius reviewed reports from the latter half of yesterday’s business since he had left early to have lunch with Andreas then prepare for the museum event. He was on a conference call with his assistants for a couple of hours when Yannis entered the room to see if he needed anything replenished. The major domo looked placid as usual, so Darius did not hurry in finishing his call. After giving instructions to the assistants who would work on Sunday, Darius rang off.
Yannis was seated at his desk in the kitchen when Darius entered the room.
“Was everything as it should be at Andreas’ home?” He asked.
“Everything seemed fine, milord. Lord Hephaestus was a bit crestfallen after speaking to his Second, but he soon recovered,” Yannis said. “He helped plan parties for the next few months and decided what invitations he would take.”
“Oh?”
“Yes, milord. His Lordship was most clever. He made sure that he would have an escort to any event he was invited to be it one of the Ladies or yourself,” Yannis replied. “After planning those parties and appearances, we worked on a problem he’s been trying to resolve.”
“What sort of problem?” Darius asked wondering why he had not heard about it.
As Yannis explained the details, Darius understood. Andreas wouldn’t come to him until he had worked out the solution. He would only want Darius to sanction the plan, not solve his problems.
“It’s a sound solution that will please everyone in some fashion,” Darius said. “Excellent work. How was Andreas when you departed?”
“He was his usual optimistic self, milord,” Yannis smiled. “On his way to read his mother’s journals while Mr. Stamos slept.”
“Very good,” Darius said. “I need you to summon Mr. Georges. I know it is not a workday. Let him know that it will be worth the trouble.”
“Yes, milord. Right away.”
“Also, I’d like note delivered to Andreas but not until after he has departed for the evening. I’m going to write it now,” Darius said.
“Yes, milord. I’ll see that Lexo gets it. He can place it where you wish once his Lordship has left,” Yannis said.
“Thank you, Yannis. I appreciate you and Lexo watching over Andreas.”
“It’s our pleasure, milord. We’ve all grown attached to him. And might I say, we’re pleased to see you two together,” Yannis said.
Darius smiled. “Not yet, Yannis. But soon. We must be so very careful.”
“We gathered that, milord. I have instructed everyone on your staff in all of your properties to alert me of any questions about you and his Lordship, no matter how trivial,” Yannis said. “We even took further precautions, milord.”
“Such as?” Darius asked.
“We had quiet conversations with the heads of staff of all of the Ladies in his Lordship’s circle,” Yannis said. “You will be pleased to know that the Ladies have instructed that no questions about him are to be answered. Everything will be directed to the Ladies themselves. It seems that they are already wary of any unusual interest in their social calendars as well.”
Darius chuckled. “He inspires deep affection and protectiveness in almost everyone he meets.”
“He does, indeed, milord,” Yannis said. “It is remarkable that such a generous, kind soul came from such a terrible place.”
“It makes one wonder what else has been overlooked?” Darius mused. “How much are we ignoring that could benefit all?”
“The books of ancient lore caution that a society divided within itself cannot endure,” Yannis said.
“Yannis, I have been reading the ancient texts of late,” Darius murmured. “It seems that all have forgotten what that caution means. I am troubled by this realization.”
“Milord, do you know why your staff remains in service while other Cosi’s servants come and go?” Yannis asked.
“I never thought about it,” he replied. “Why?”
“You are different from the others. You are different even from the other Cosi leaders,” Yannis said. “You have been moving toward a rule that does not include threat of death since you came to power. You do not exist purely for power and pleasure. You respect good work no matter who is doing it. And you have vision. You will keep our society from making the error that destroyed the one before.”
“I have only begun to look into the past,” Darius said.
“But it was known that you would,” Yannis countered. “Your teachers and fosters watched each generation of Cosi for the one. You asked the right questions and watched everything. They knew you were the one. Your personal staff was chosen to protect you in your task, milord. You and now Lord Hephaestus.”
Darius sank onto a nearby stool. “What has Andreas to do with this?”
“He is connected to Amara, Kacia and Eris,” Yannis replied. “He is determined to find a way to uplift elements of Eris. He is in control of the well-being of many in Kacia as he is influencing important houses in Amara. His Lordship is the key to uniting this society. You have the power to help him and protect him.”
“I have had the feeling for some time that we are all about to make a mistake that will drive us to ruin,” Darius said quietly. “And then came Andreas. I feared I had become a heretic.”
“Many will think you are, milord, if this is not handled well,” Yannis said. “You must tread very, very carefully.”
“For now, I must study,” Darius said. “I’m hoping the Professor’s next expedition will lead me to answers. Thank you for being so candid, Yannis. I needed to hear this. I’m going to write that note.”
“Very good, milord. I will summon Georges straight away.”
Darius returned to his office feeling better than he had for some time. The last few days had left him feeling exposed. Yannis made him realize that he was still well protected. He was deeply pleased with his staff for their care of Andreas. His fears allayed, Darius wrote a heartfelt note to Andreas. He meant for it to be the last thing he read before going to sleep. It was filled with warmth and mirth and some longing.
It took quite a bit of time to compose the note. Darius was actually surprised when Yannis came to tell him that Mr. Georges was awaiting him in the dining room. He picked up his sketches and went to join him. The jeweler rose upon seeing Darius, extending his hand with a smile.
“Good Afternoon, milord,” he said as they shook hands.
“My thanks for taking the time to come by on your day off, Mr. Georges.”
“Not at all, milord. You are my best customer,” he said as they seated themselves at the table. “What can I do for you today?”
Darius showed him the sketches and described in great detail what he wanted the craftsman to create. Mr. Georges took the sketches and made his own notes. He adjusted the drawing, then did one of his own.
“Is this what you have in mind, milord?”
“Exactly,” Darius said softly. “And I want the items made of the same comfortable material.”
“Easily done, milord,” Mr. Georges said. “It will be very comfortable – even more so than the last one. May I ask permission to incorporate this as one of the models available for other customers?”
“Do you think anyone else will want one of this type?” Darius asked with surprise.
“I do, indeed. I’ve had inquiries about creating something this subtle before,” he replied. “With you leading the way as an example, I see many – if not all of my clients – requesting this as a replacement.”
“Certainly. I have no qualms about sharing this design,” Darius said with a shrug. “How long will it take to fashion?”
“I can have it for you this time next week,” Mr. Georges replied. “Sooner, if you wish.”
“Next weekend will suffice,” Darius said. “And I must have absolute discretion until I make it public.”
“You don’t have to say, milord. Not even my wife knows who I came to see today,” Mr. Georges said with a reassuring smile. “But if I may just say that I am happy you will retrieve his Lordship.”
“I never mentioned...”
“My wife showed me this morning’s paper. She is much enamored with him,” Mr. Georges chuckled. “She showed me the photo of you leaving the restaurant with him. She was thrilled.”
“You’re good wife is most astute. Act surprised when you see the photo with your creation in its place,” Darius said wryly.
Mr.Georges chuckled. “I shall, milord. Good day, and my thanks for another plump contract.”
“Good day, Mr.Georges. You are more than welcome.”
Darius returned to finish and sign the note. He gave it to Yannis then retired to the Master bath to prepare for his evening. A bath had been drawn. Darius had a new outfit laid out. He was dressing with great care to make sure that Calix eyes were on him and Mykos. He had heard that Kozani would also be at the club opening. Though Darius knew that his intentions toward Andreas would not stay hidden for much longer, he wanted to indicate that he could hold onto him with an open hand. His staff had made certain that there would be photos in the newspapers of them enjoying an evening well apart from each other.
Much to Darius’ surprise, it was not going to be that difficult. Andreas was his. That had never changed. He was well protected everywhere he went. There was no reason to chain him down – unless it was for their mutual pleasure. That thought made the Cosi smile, but he did not dwell on it. The decision not to wait the full sixty days has presented a new problem for him. The need to claim Andreas was even stronger than before the museum event. Only his respect for the young Lord kept him from acting. Andreas would yield, that was certain, but he would also be hurt if Darius did not return the collar first. Having his exquisite one could wait until he returned the collar and tag. There would never be hurt or sadness between them.
“Will you want a small meal upon returning, milord?” Yannis asked as he helped Darius into his coat.
“Perhaps some bread and cheese and fruit,” Darius said. “And some chilled mineral water. You may leave it out. There is no need to wait up for me.”
“I don’t mind, milord. I’ll likely be reading.”
“Very well,” Darius said. “I’m off then.”
“Have a good time, milord.”
“Thank you.”
Darius did enjoy the first part of the evening a great deal. Mykos had gone all out with dinner. His Major Domo made a series of small plates much like ones served in a restaurant they frequented. The dessert was a pie from one of their favorite bakeries. The wines were from the professor’s haul. Everything was a delight to his discerning palate. And Mykos was in fine form as well. They talked about everyone who had attended the museum event and laughed quite heartily. They were still laughing when they reached the nightclub.
“That so called artist has called my office twice to sell me that ‘installation’ Cleanliness,” he muttered as they swept past the line of patrons and photographers toward the club entrance.
“What did you tell him?” Darius asked.
“I told him that one of the janitors could ‘install’ that for less than a pittance,” he replied dryly. “I should have had him beaten.”
Darius chuckled while shaking his head. A very comely hostess showed them to a table that was central to all of the action. The club was quite spacious in feel despite the number of tables jammed inside along with the bandstand and the dance floor. The décor was that popular modern style with lots of chrome and glass and mirrors. The crowd was the young and very well-heeled Calix dressed in the latest fashions. It was all very predictable. Darius and Mykos ordered a bottle of wine to share. Mykos looked at Darius intently.
“I hear this band is quite talented,” he said.
“I’ve heard that, too. So long as they aren’t singing to me or about me, I’ll be very happy,” Darius muttered raising his glass.
“Here, here,” Mykos said as they touched glasses.
“My, but you are in good humor, Darius, considering,” someone said.
Both Cosi looked to find Lord Kozani standing before them.
“Good evening,” Darius replied.
“Considering what?” Mykos asked. There was an actual edge in his lilting voice.
“That Lord Hephaestus is not here,” he continued.
“Mykos and I have managed to find amusement long before his Lordship came into my life,” Darius said mildly.
“That’s why we get invited everywhere,” Mykos added.
“You are asked after everywhere I go,” Lord Kozani admitted. “And I thought you two worked all the time.”
“We work almost all the time,” Mykos corrected before sipping his wine. “We make our leisure time count.”
“I must say, for someone who was extremely possessive of a newly claimed Dami, you are downright placid so soon parted from him,” Lord Kozani observed.
Darius raised his brows slightly as he sipped his wine.
“Perhaps you have miscalculated somewhere,” Darius commented. His expression was neutral. His demeanor was completely relaxed.
Lord Kozani reacted for a fraction of a second before he schooled his features into its usual sardonic mask.
“Perhaps...well, I must get back to my guests. Enjoy your evening, Brothers.”
“You as well,” Darius said.
Mykos added his best wishes as Lord Kozani took his place at a prime table nearby. For a time they enjoyed their wine and the ambiance in silence.
“At first, I thought that comment was not wise,” Mykos said. “Once again, I realize that you are brilliant. You have pulled him out of the shadows.”
“And I won’t move against him,” Darius said. “He will have to act and it must be flagrant.”
“Brilliant! Ah, here comes the band.”
Darius forgot about Lord Kozani and focused on the lovely wine and the entertainment. Everything was as incredible as expected. The Cosi allowed himself to thoroughly enjoy the evening and the company of his closest friend. Though there was a part of him that was wondering exactly what was happening in Kacia.
Despite all of his grumbling about the upper classes, Viktor enjoyed dressing like a Calix. He wore the clothing well. The black pants with the subtle pleat and cuffs worked well with the crisp white, collarless shirt and Viktor’s black leather jacket. Andreas chose a deep brown ensemble including a leather jacket as well. They still looked like Crew leaders, but much more refined.
“Okay, Viktor, I need you and the guys to really help me out,” Andreas said. “We have to let the Ladies and the Doc have a great time, but we have to keep them safe. Odigos is going to read them the security riot act.”
“What do you need us to do?”
“Keep them away from the jerks. Don’t let the Doc stare at anyone for too long,” Andreas said. “And don’t let anyone talk about our business with the Doc. Oh, and keep the stories as clean as possible. I mean, they like a naughty story...”
“But they are Ladies, and the Doc doesn’t get out much.”
“Exactly.”
“I can’t believe I’ll be escorting real Ladies to Club Zero,” Viktor chuckled. “You are living one crazy life.”
“Yeah, I am. You’ll like the Ladies. They are very nice,” Andreas said.
“We’ve arrived, milord,” Odigos said. “Shall I give the talk inside the residence or the car?”
“The residence,” Andreas answered. “I think they’ll be too excited by the time we get into the car.”
“Very good, milord.”
The Ladies were in the parlor just to the left of the door. The Doc entered the room as Andreas, Viktor and Odigos did.
“Oh my, you both look so handsome and even dangerous,” Lady Kronos murmured.
The other Ladies agreed.
“Ladies, this is my Second in Zed Crew, Viktor Stamos.”
“Good evening, Ladies. Hey, Doc.”
“Hello, my lad,” Jergen said.
“Good evening, Mr. Stamos,” Lady Santorini said with a smile. “This very kind of you to escort us to the Club.”
“My pleasure,” Viktor smiled.
“Ladies, Doc, before we leave, my guard would like to give us some instructions to keep us all safe,” Andreas said. “Odigos?”
“Thank you, milord,” Odigos said. “My Ladies, Doctor Jergen, Club Zero looks like a very safe nightclub, and it is if you heed just a few precautions. Though there will be other guards with our party, don’t wander around alone. Keep one of Zed Crew with you and keep in eyesight of your guard. Do not accept food or drink from anyone but your server or someone from Zed Crew. If you feel the least bit uncomfortable or intimidated, signal your guard.”
“This is so exciting,” Lady Hermes said. “I’ve never been cautioned before.”
“Nor have I,” Lady Lyta said.
Andreas shook his head with a chuckle. “Okay, Ladies, grab an arm and we’ll be off. Let’s go, Doc.”
The Ladies stayed with Andreas and Viktor with Doc Jergen and Odigos bringing up the rear. Everyone fit easily into the stretch vehicle Darius lent him for the evening. The guards followed in his regular vehicle. The chatter was amusing with the Ladies pressing Viktor for some lurid tales. He obliged with something fairly tame lore from their school days. The Ladies laughed with delight. Jergen was very tickled with the whole scene. Everyone was in fine humor when the car reached Club Zero.
“There’s a lot of cameras out there,” Andreas murmured. “Just keep hold of our arms, so we don’t get separated.”
“They will get our photos, won’t they?” Lady Kronos asked. “I just had my hair done.”
“They’ll get their snaps, no worries,” Andreas said. “Just smile and keep walking.”
“We’ll be very mysterious that way,” Lady Santorini said. “Everyone will be wondering what we’re up to.”
The Ladies were very pleased at that notion. Thus, exiting the vehicle and sweeping into Club Zero was easy enough. The Ladies all smiled at the flashing cameras. The crowd parted in the wake of the formidable guards. Stu met them as they reached the empty dance floor.
“Good evening Ladies and kind Sir,” he said with a bow. “Welcome to Club Zero. My name is Stu.”
“Stu is one of our best mates from school,” Andreas said. “He runs the place.”
“Pleased to meet you, Mr. Stu,” Lady Santorini said. “We’re all so excited to be here.”
“Come, we have a private area of tables set up. Cook has gone all out,” Stu said as he lead them to the Zed Crew booths.
“I hope you’re all hungry,” Andreas said. “The food is really good.”
“Oh, we are,” Lady Kronos said. “Thirsty, too!”
“Stu, how about a pitcher of your tastiest cocktails?” Andreas said.
“Coming up along with a tray of appetizers,” Stu said with a bow.
“Doc Jergen is in the house!” Hector exclaimed from the back of the room.
Jergen stood up with a big grin.
“Hello, my lad, hello!” he said and they shook hands. “So good to see you!”
“Back at you, Doc. What do you think of the place?”
“Most interesting, but much quieter than expected.”
“Andreas wanted you to be able to eat in peace,” Hector said. “In a couple of hours, this joint will be ca-razy! Hey Andreas, Viktor. Why don’t I have a new outfit?”
“Maybe I’ll hand them out as party favors Monday,” Andreas muttered. “Allow me to introduce you to Lady Santorini, Lady Lyta, Lady Hermes and Lady Kronos. Ladies, this is Hector Raden. He is Third in command of Zed Crew.”
“Is all of your Crew so handsome?” Lady Lyta asked with a giggle.
“No,” Hector said, flashing a big smile. “The rest are dogs.”
The Ladies laughed heartily causing the few Calix across the room to look with intense curiosity. Hector seated himself next to Jergen. The pair spoke quietly as the drinks and appetizers were served.
“Lord Hephaestus, this is ever so kind of you,” Lady Santorini said with a tremulous smile.
“It’s really a pleasure, milady,” Andreas replied quietly. “I would be home alone otherwise.”
“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Lady Santorini smiled. “I’m sure Lord Galatea would be willing to spend the evening with you. I saw that photograph in the newspapers. And he watched you all during Friday’s event.”
“Well, I’m not sure...”
“Oh, I know what I saw, you dear man,” she said with a wistful sigh. “I didn’t think his kind could truly feel emotions until that night.”
“I really can’t say, milady,” Andreas murmured, blushing deeply.
“That’s alright, it’s plain to see for someone paying attention,” the Lady smiled. “What a colorful cocktail.”
The attention of the table soon turned to the food and the drinks. After a tray of appetizers of roasted vegetable spread on rounds of toasted bread, Cook chose a simple poultry dish that was roasted with citrus over handmade noodles. It was a favorite of Andreas’ and Zed Crew that he only made for staff and special guests. Everyone fell silent as they enjoyed the main dish. By the time dessert was served, the joint was crowded, and the band was setting up. Andreas was pleased that his guests were in fine spirits. Everything delighted them from the cheeky servers to the naughty tales told by his mates.
For a time, the Ladies and the Doc were content to stay in the booth. But then the music started.
“I would like to dance,” Lady Kronos announced gazing intently at Viktor.
“Certainly, milady,” Viktor said with a smile. “Shall we?”
“We have enough Crew to go around, miladies,” Andreas said waving the rest of the guys over. “Lady Santorini, shall we?”
“Oh my, yes,” she said.
“Hector, I know the Doc wants to take a tour,” Andreas said as he stood with the Ladies.
“I do, indeed!”
“Let’s do it, then.”
Andreas found that all the Ladies knew their way around a dance floor. They were pleasantly surprised to find Zed Crew did as well.
“At least once a year, charities from Amara would come to try to makes us little gentlemen,” Andreas explained. “There were always dance lessons.”
“I see...well, it served you in good stead,” Lady Santorini commented. “May I get a tour as well? I’d really like to compliment the cook.”
“Of course, milady,” Andreas replied. “The Cook enjoys all compliments.”
“Let’s dance for a while first,” she said with a smile. “I haven’t dance in many years.”
“Then, let’s just dance.”
Over the course of three numbers, Andreas changed partners so that he had a dance with each of the Ladies. Somehow, he ended up with Lady Santorini at the end. As they left the dance floor to take the tour, Lady Kronos and Viktor were headed for the bar. The other two Ladies continued to dance.
Lady Santorini was fascinated by the rats nest of rooms in the back of the Club.
“Most of the Crew lives here as well as work out of here,” Andreas said. “It’s safer to stay together. Housing in a decent neighborhood is expensive even if a landlord is willing to rent to someone in a Crew.”
“The rooms are very neat,” she commented.
“There is something to be said for what we learned in boarding school,” Andreas said.
When they reached the office, they found Hector holding a ladder for Doc Jergen who was looking under a ceiling tile.
“He’s found something fascinating about the age of the building,” Hector explained in response to the curious stares.
“Doc, Stu won’t like it if you tear apart the ceiling,” Andreas said wryly.
“I’m merely peeking, lad. This building dates back many, many decades,” he said. “This is astonishing.”
Jergen came down the ladder with a big grin on his face.
“I think I could do a dig right here,” he exclaimed.
“Umm, yeah. Stu really wouldn’t enjoy that. Let’s stick to the desert for a while,” Andreas said.
“Oh, very well.”
“C’mon, Doc. There are a lot of mating rituals you can watch from the booth,” Hector said.
“Oh yes? Lead on, then,” Jergen said.
The lady laughed softly.
“You have a lot of patience, milord,” she commented.
“I suppose. It comes with the job,” Andreas replied.
“Your Hector has that quality as well,” she said.
“Hector is a great asset to the Crew,” Andreas agreed. “So, this is Zed Crew’s office. I used to sleep here before I got my apartment in Kacia.”
“It’s just like any office,” the Lady said. “I was expecting more of a lair with weapons lining the wall and such.”
Andreas chuckled.
“So did I,” Lady Kronos said as she entered the room with Viktor. “This is kind of dull.”
“Smarter Crews don’t keep weapons where they live,” Andreas said.
