A Scheduled Encounter
She stood at the door, handbag tucked firmly under one arm. She reached up to the knocker, ran her fingers across its smooth, cold ring. Lifted it, dropped it. Thunk. She held her breath. The wind nuzzled her gently, slipping across her stocking clad legs, rustling her blouse. She had not known what to wear for this…event. She had deliberated for hours in front of the mirror. In the end, it was a moot point. She had forgotten the carefully-chosen outfit on the bed when she went to work and had to come in her work clothes; a simple suit shift dress and a crisp white blouse, with slippery nylons and sensible pumps.
She heard footsteps from inside the townhouse. Heavy men’s shoes on wooden floorboards approached and the door clicked and opened. He seemed to fill the doorway, broad shoulders and thick arms. He wore only a light singlet and faded jeans. He smiled when he saw her, looked her up and down.
“Hello Miss Professional. Come to file my paperwork?” His voice was deep, resonant. She felt it vibrate in her chest like a bass drum. She could only smile nervously. He returned the smile genuinely, showing straight, white teeth. He stepped aside and motioned for her to enter. Her steps were tentative as she squeezed past him. She heard the door shut and he spoke again.
