“Okay, Miss Shaw,” called Dr. Ramone from his office, “I’m going to be heading out now.”
“Thank goodness for small miracles,” Emily Shaw muttered under her breath. He was finally leaving for his conference, which meant a few days without him “accidentally” groping her. It wouldn’t last long, but at least it would be a nice reprieve for both her and his poor doctoral students.
”I should be back on Thursday next week,” he said in his annoying, high-pitched, nasal voice as he came into her small office and leaned over her. She instinctively hunched over at her keyboard to keep him from seeing down her shirt.
“Are you sure you don’t want to come along with me? Perhaps I could use some… assistance from my secretary while I’m at the conference. Still time to get you a ticket, I expect.”
“Sorry, no… I have a lot going on this week and couldn’t possibly go,” she said apologetically.
She had to try very hard to hide her revulsion at the fat, greasy, sleazeball of a scientist. It wasn’t enough that he tried to take credit for his students’ research and skimped on pay and office supplies. No, he had to proposition her constantly too, and she hated him for it. She had been hunting for jobs elsewhere for a solid six months. It was worth leaving the lab to get away from his accidental groping and his unapologetic innuendo and propositions, and plus she was due for a major raise by now anyway.
“Hope you have a good trip, Dr. Ramone,” she called after him in as he grabbed his briefcase and headed for the door.
“Like, a good trip down the stairs, preferably breaking your neck,” added her thoughts.
“Worry not,” he called back. “You will be fine while I am gone. Just take care of the students’ schedules, and we’ll talk on Thursday!”
As the door to the hall clicked shut behind him, a new e-mail popped up on her screen with a happy beeping sound. It was from Bellavista Hospital! Thank god, she thought, and she hurriedly opened the e-mail. Were they going to give her an offer? She had applied to that administrative assistant position months ago. Yes! They were! She squealed with glee and read the rest of the e-mail. They wanted her to start on Monday, which was even better. She’d never have to see Doctor Sleazebag again!
This was an amazing stroke of luck for her. The pay was slightly better, and it was much closer to home than this dump. Best of all, no Ramone!
“On the other hand,” she thought, “I probably won’t have guys my age around anymore.”
She sighed and glanced out the window of her cubicle-sized office into the main lab where all the doctoral students were busily working. They were only a few years younger than her – all mid-twenties – and for all the problems and expenses of living in California, she had to admit one thing: the guys were fucking hot. There was one guy in the lab that she would fuck without any reservations if she was out on the town with him, and the other two weren’t bad for future scientists either. They weren’t her cup of tea for a wild night, exactly, but they’d definitely be prime real estate once they got their degrees and moved on to making six figures or so. If those guys were prime, then what did that make her favorite, Mike?
