A Sliding Rule
What now seems a hundred years ago I had left the Navy to undertake my first venture into the real world. It took to me to Harlow, north of London; firstly seeking suitable digs for a few months while I tried to exchange my sea legs for a civilian occupation. I was lucky.
Being a qualified Electronics Engineer I was immediately taken on by a large electronics firm focused on military radar installations for the then new Harrier jump jet and ground installations. I had no trouble finding a new temporary home, a little thatched cottage on the better side of town. In the meantime it enabled me to explore the market for a permanent site.
My new hosts were Mavis and Joe, a retired couple who were the similitude of the stereotype grandparents: she large and rounded and a typical homely earth mother, he diminutive and as thin as a rake. I couldn't have wished for a better residence on reflection and knew I would feel as much at home as was possible. I presented myself and was welcomed warmly into the nest of cooking smells, musty carpets and cluttered furniture.
Dropping my luggage in the hall I was shown up to my room. It turned out to be spacious and well furnished much to my surprise: double bed against a gabled window with window seat overlooking a large garden studded with elms and beech; a heavy wardrobe on the other side; the other side contained a deep, 2-seater Chesterfield leather settee with bellowing arms, old-fashioned but comfortable; a small writing bureau with a swivel top and chair; dressing table and mirror with the ubiquitous washing bowl set, richly decorated with hand-painted flowers.
