Airlift

I'd arrived at the first class lounge of a well-known Middle Eastern airline in a rush only to find the flight had been delayed for well over 1.5 hours; something to do with the arrival of a late connecting flight to New York, so there was nothing to it but to relax, order a 12-year-old Irish malt and make myself comfortable with the great book I'd brought. In fact I made it a double when the waiter enquired after my needs because not only was I feeling good, but also, I deserved it.

The lounge, not large, was extremely well furnished: deep burgundy Persians, Shiraz, Qom and Isfahan pieces, some hung on walls, others decorated the floor; subdued lighting pooling to over-stuffed black leather sofas draped with gaily coloured tribal khilims; sofas arranged in quads to small coffee tables and lying low like so many camels awaiting the start of a caravan; except this caravan had no herdsmen since the area was practically empty. Not surprising I suppose from a glance at my watch which indicated 23:00. A small cocktail bar at the other end entertained a couple in conversations with the barman in quiet tones while Debussy‘s "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" on piano escaped serenely over speakers.

This end of the lounge was divided into two intimate booths separated by a tapestry set at 90 degrees so that there was an allusion the booth contained an "entrance". It housed an elongated sofa, a low glass-top coffee table and two stylish, leather-worked high-backed chairs opposite. Typically Middle Eastern flavoured.
