Before Alice

Part 1: Alice
“Can I ask you guys a question?”
Beth and Carla both glanced up from the dishes they were clearing off the dinner table. Dessert had been chocolate pudding, and Beth had hinted that she’d saved some of the sauce for later, but my curiosity had gotten the better of me.
“Sure, go ahead,” Carla said, smiling a little.
“How did you first get together?”
Beth grabbed the plates from Carla’s hands and disappeared into the kitchen with them. “Oooh, it’s story time for Alice! Don’t start without me.”
Carla rolled her eyes good-naturedly, and I followed her over to the couch, sitting down with my thigh brushing hers. She kissed the side of my head, and together we waited for Beth to join us.
She returned after less than a minute, dropping down on the other side of Carla and grinning at me.
“We knew each other from college. We were both freshmen at NYU, and we were in the same dorm, so we vaguely knew each other to say hi to. I thought she was hot, but I was kinda distracted learning my way around, and we didn’t have any classes together either. That was about as far as it went for the first few months.” Beth sighed with exaggerated regret, turning her eyes to Carla. “If I’d just hit on you the moment I saw you, hon, we could have saved a lot of wasted time.”
Carla leaned over to kiss her, and I watched them affectionately. They had been my idols for years – the only couple who made any sense to me, and the only people I fantasised about. The girls next door who’d babysat for me when I was younger, then realised I’d grown up hot when they saw me sunbathing in the garden a few months ago.
Now they’d seduced me into their bed, and I loved them more than ever. We were up at Beth’s uncle’s cabin for a long weekend, so we could have as much sex as we wanted without my parents suspecting a thing.
I’d wondered how they’d first met for a while. I was pretty sure they must have taken months of dancing around each other, figuring out what they wanted from their friendship, then taking the relationship further after that.
It turned out I was wrong, and the truth was much hotter right from the start.
Carla pulled back from Beth and turned to kiss my forehead. “Okay, we first really connected in the February of our freshman year…”

Part 2: Beth in 2002
I walked into the GLBT centre, my arms laden with posters. The NYU GLBT society was one of the easier ways to meet girls who liked pussy, and although I wasn’t on the militant side like some of its members, I’d volunteered to help organise things. I’d always been into art, and helping out with posters for the university’s Pride before Pride – so named because a lot of NYU students would be out of state in June, when the real NYC Pride March took place – seemed like an easy enough contribution.
I didn’t expect to see anyone else at this hour – I’d nabbed a set of keys from the society head, Markus – so I was startled when I rounded the corner and saw I wasn’t alone. There was a girl sitting on one of the couches, a pile of bedding surrounding her, and as she wiped hastily at her cheeks, turning her face from me, I realised she’d been crying.
“Hey… I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you.” Letting the posters slither out of my arms onto the coffee table, I sat on the couch opposite hers. “Are you okay?”
She took a deep breath and looked up at me, and her eyes widened at the same time mine did. “It’s you!”
“And you.” I felt a light flutter of attraction – this girl lived in my dorm, a couple of floors down, if I remembered rightly. I’d smiled and said hi, even turned to watch her ass a couple of times, but I’d never dreamed I’d find her camped out for the night in the GLBT centre. “Carly, right?”
She smiled sadly. “Close. It’s Carla. I’m sorry – I’ve seen you around, but I can’t remember your name.”
“It’s Beth.” I held out my hand, and after a moment’s hesitation she took it, squeezing lightly before dropping both her hand and her gaze.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” I didn’t want to intrude, but she was obviously upset about something.
Carla sighed and wrapped the duvet around her a little tighter. “I don’t know. I’ve never… ugh.”
I waited, not wanting to rush her and trying not to look like I was checking her out. It was hard not to, though. She had long, slightly wavy chestnut hair, a little tousled, and her tearstained face was no less gorgeous for it. My attraction was growing by the second, but I wasn’t the kind of girl to take advantage of it.
