Venus sat in her chair under the bright lights and hyperventilated while Jamie worked on her makeup. “I don’t know if I can do this. I can’t do this,” she said between deep breaths.

“Hush, shug,” said Jamie, concentrating on Venus’s eyeliner. “You’re gonna do fine. Now sit still or you’ll look like a raccoon.”

A damn sexy raccoon, Jamie thought to herself as she continued painting the woman in front of her. Venus looked amazing in anything she chose to wear but on a night like tonight when she’d taken care with her outfit and accessories she seemed to have stepped from the same seashell that had once borne her namesake. Jamie wasn’t sure, but she thought that the makeup she was applying to her friend was smoothing and reapplying itself when she looked away. Finally she sheathed the eyeliner and stepped back, looking at Venus from several angles. “All right, hon, that’s as good as I’m gonna get here. I dunno why you bothered. You look incredible no matter what y’do.”

Venus sighed and stared at herself in the mirror. “I’m just nervous.”
